Meditating on Who You Are
Before you were even a twinkle in your father’s eye, your Higher Power knew who you were.
This Higher Power is responsible for creating every single atom, molecule, and cell in the tissues and organs of your body. In order to orchestrate the symphony that is life, the Higher Power knew all of us before anyone else ever imagined that we would be born. Your mother first learned of you when the doctor told her she was pregnant, but the Higher Power already knew you. The friends you have made throughout your life may know you very well, but the Higher Power knows you intimately and always has, even before you met your friends. Before you ever even drew your first breath, your Higher Power had shown love and compassion for you by providing you with everything you would need to grow and survive, and this concern will continue as long as you live and beyond. You are and always well be the offspring of the Highest Power in the universe.
To achieve the perfect sense of well-being that the Higher Power wishes for you, you must realize that your real self - your inner Witness - upon being born left the womb of human flesh to enter the womb of the very cosmos where all living things exist. Every single speck of existence in the universe has been provided to enlighten you and welcome you to this celestial stage. You hold the key to becoming conscious of this celestial cosmos and learning how to embrace your identity to become one with the universe. The Who You Are meditation technique is designed specifically for this eternal enlightenment.
Position your body in the manner that is the most comfortable and comforting to you, but in a position that allows you to be alert and aware, without running the risk of falling asleep. Without closing your eyes, calm your inner thoughts and emotions and take time to ensure that your mind is serene and free from distractions.
Lower your gaze down to any spot on the floor or ground beneath you. For example, if you are sitting on a sandy beach, pick out a single grain of sand to focus on. If you are sitting on a rug, lock your gaze on one single fiber. If you are sitting on a hardwood floor, focus on one small whorl in the pattern of the wood beneath you. Consider that your mind is making a decision about what to focus on, but do not react to your choice and do not judge or compare the available choices; just make a random selection about what spot to focus your attention on.
Gaze steadily at that spot and continue focusing no matter how hard your inner chatter tries to distract you or discourage your intentions. The longer you concentrate, the fainter and less insistent your inner thoughts will be, until they eventually cease altogether. And as you begin to focus intensely, you will begin to see movement in the spot upon which you gaze. For instance, if you are gazing at a grain of sand, the other sand particles surrounding it may begin to emit a soft light or colorful glow that flows and ripples in a paisley pattern. This effect is caused by the atomic nature of the real world being presented to you in its purest form. In short order, the earth, wind, fire, water, and air within you and around you will become unified with this dance of atomic purity.
The dance of light and motion will continue until the chatter of your mind brings it to a halt. Therefore, maintain focus so that your mind is completely still, and the intensity of the dance will continue to grow until the experience becomes so overwhelming that you feel an explosion of gratitude, love, and adoration for the Higher Power for delivering to you this wonderful experience. If you make a conscious effort to connect with the silence of your inner Witness, you will become aware of your total connection to the universe and the Higher Power that created it. Having a firm grasp on this connection will erase any feelings of being separate from the remainder of the universe, and your separateness of body, feeling, or mind will evaporate and clear your mind, freeing you to experience pure happiness and clarity.
It may seem impossible to sit comfortably and remain focused on one single spot for a long time. But if you can, then the Who You Are meditation technique will work for you in helping to eliminate feelings such as frustration, annoyance, self-loathing, self-consciousness, and dismay. And like most activities, the more you practice this meditation, the more successful it will become. And with perseverance, the end result will lead you to total happiness forever.
