So you have tried all the possible commercial shampoos for your hair problem and still have not got the desired results. Then maybe it's time you try some medicated shampoo. Though strong, they are known to be more effective and safe compared to other regular shampoos. These shampoos are made especially to treat certain ailments and problems that affect the hair and scalp. Some shampoos may target only one problem and others may intend to solve multiple problems. For example, few shampoos are meant only to cure one problem, be it hair fall, oily hair, or dandruff, or folliculitis whereas some shampoos can treat some of the aforementioned ailments or all of them. Each shampoo uses certain ingredients that can cure a specific hair problem and hence it is advisable to go through an ingredient list.

For Oily Hair
Oily hair is generally caused due to excessive oil secretion of the hair glands. In some cases genetics can also play a role in making your hairy greasy. To fix the oily hair problem you must choose a shampoo that corrects oil secretion disorder in the scalp. People with oily hair should look for products that contain any of the following ingredients:
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Rosemary Oil
  • Tea Tree Oil
  • Sage
  • Eucalyptus
  • Chamomile
  • Sulfur
  • Cedar
  • Kaolin
  • Menthol
  • Citric acid
  • Starch
Some of the above ingredients are known as great cleansers that help in removing the dirt and oil from the scalp and hair. Some ingredients are also very gentle on hair and dissolve the oil build up deposits making the hair shafts thicker and stronger. With the regular use of suitable shampoo for oily hair, it is possible to get silky, non greasy hair within few weeks.

For Thinning Hair
Today the market is full of such shampoos that are meant to curb thinning hair problem and control the hair loss. But in order to select a suitable shampoo you must know the cause of the hair fall problem. The most common cause of baldness is generally genetic. Hormonal imbalance is again a usual cause for sudden hair fall. Nutritional deficiencies may also lead to thinning hair. Apart from this, environment problems, such as pollutions, exposure to chemicals, and some medical factors too can cause hail loss. Hair loss occurs when hair follicles become weaker and when its completely damaged, it stops producing hair. There are very few ingredients that can strengthen follicles, such as, minoxidil and ketoconazole etc. It is advisable to consult your doctor before using a shampoo for thinning hair. A doctor will prescribe you the right hair loss prevention shampoo after going through your medical history that would help him detect the root cause of the hair problem.

For Folliculitis
Folliculitis is caused when the hair follicle is infected with bacteria, yeast, or fungus. Sometimes shaving or wearing clothes that rub the skin too can result in irritating the follicle which further leads to infection. In some cases, follicles can get blocked by the excessive sweating, machine oils, or putting on too much of make up, that may result in folliculitis. So the shampoo that you would use for folliculitis should have antibacterial properties. You can also use antifungal shampoo to control the fungus infection in scalp. However, you must consult your doctor before using any shampoo for this hair disorder as it is a critical one. You may have to take oral medicines along with medicated creams or lotions for topical application that your doctor would prescribe you.

Whatever shampoo you choose make sure to not to use it frequently as it can damage your hair further. Any medicated shampoo should be used once a week for any hair or scalp problem. For severe hair problem you can use it twice a week and for mild problems, use it once every fortnight. However, consult your doctor regarding the frequency as well to get better results.
