Computer software is helping to gather, store, update and transmit medical records instead of the traditional paper file way. Ever had the frustration of moving or changing doctors or having your insurance plan coverage change doctors? More than likely you’ll be filling out more paperwork with the new physician’s office. Records might not always be speedily transferred from one office to another which proves bothersome. With electronic medical records, the hope is that in the future records can be transferred instantly among doctors’ offices and hospitals. This is already in effect today in some places. These terminals are connected to electronic medical records that can be pulled up and diagnosis can be made and treatments given. Doctors even have access to information, databases and records through the use of PDA’s.
Legislation
In 1996 the U.S. Legislature passed the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act or HIPAA for short. This act established standards for electronic transactions such as Medicare claims and protecting the privacy of patients’ electronic records. This act is aimed at improving health care administration on a national level. By standardizing several aspects of health care administration the process will be efficient, faster and better. The act encourages use of health care technology and of electronic data interchange, it’s meant as an act to regulate but rather to unite and streamline health care administration by standardizing the electronic process
