Medical Billing Jobs from Home
Although the Internet has a plethora of information regarding medical billing jobs from home, these jobs are generally meant for people who have prior experience in the field of medical billing.
Job Description of a Medical Billing and Coding Professional
A medical billing professional has to submit claims to the insurance company, for services provided to the patients by a health care provider, since the latter receives only a part of the payment as co-pay from patients who have some form of medical insurance. The remaining amount has to be claimed, from the insurance company, by verifying the patient account information against the specifications of the insurance policy. In other words, the job of a medical billing professional is to submit the balance of the invoice, that is due to the appropriate insurance company. The professional is expected to enter data electronically to process charges, payments, denials and adjustments. This practice is in conformity with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which revolutionized the national standards for health care transactions by encouraging the use of electronic data interchange (EDI). The professional may also be required to analyze code, surgical procedures and diagnosis using ICD-9 & CPT-4 codes. Generally, people who aspire to become medical billing claims and coding professionals, need to attend an education program that provides them the necessary training in understanding medical terminology, CPT Coding, ICD9 Coding, DSM Coding and a thorough understanding of the managed care plans, viz. Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) and Point of Service (POS) plan.
Medical Billing from Home
The Internet seems to contain tons of information regarding medical billing jobs from home. Jobs in medical billing are a dime a dozen. Although medical billing from home seems like a lucrative option, one can opt for it only if one has adequate experience in the field of medical billing and coding. Inexperienced medical billing professionals, interested in working from the comfort of their home, may be incapable of making a career of home based medical billing jobs due to the following reasons:
The professional may make a mistake while submitting claims and the doctor may spend a considerable amount of money and time on resubmitting claims that have been denied. Sometimes claims, that are correctly submitted, may be denied on account of reasons best known to the insurance company and the experienced medical billing professional. It's evident that a novice may not know the best way of dealing with issues that may crop up in the course of work. The only way of getting around this problem is by working under an experienced medical billing professional or by working for a health care provider who prefers employing certified medical billing professionals. A medical billing professional also needs to have access to HIPAA compatible, medical billing software and a list of potential clients that is easily available at the workplace. An experienced medical billing professional will find it easier to work from home since a health care provider may be more than willing to trust the medical billing professional with the job of filing claims. There are a number of people who profess to offer medical billing jobs from home. An inexperienced professional or a person lacking prior training may fall prey to fraudulent promoters who misrepresent the earning potential of a home based medical billing business.
One must ensure that one does not fall prey to fraudulent medical billing promoters who promise to deliver HIPAA compatible software and a list of potential clients in return for a sum of money. The promoters may not live up to their end of the bargain or may misrepresent the earning potential of a home based medical billing business. Even if they do fulfill their promise, the chances of the business materializing into a lucrative enterprise is contingent to the professional having the requisite experience to deliver the desired results.
