Silk Ball.
-Mark-
The last few day's have been incredible. Day's playing out in the snow with Aleigha, Night's curling up by the fire side reading with Rose leaning against my shoulder and Aleigha asleep in bed.
For year's I've mentally asked my sister and brother what was so good about having a husband/wife and a family when you have to focus on work and how fast life was moving. But now, I realize what was so fantastic about it:
Looking into the eyes of the person you love and knowing they belong in this place, this place call home. Enjoying a little ball of energy who believes in a world full of unicorns and rainbows. Who's eye's share the same joy and hope that her mother's does. Knowing they both belong in your protection and love.
Now here I stand at the bottom of the staircase in a tux with a black bow tie. Waiting for my two ladies to join me for the Silk Ball. I hear the footsteps of a lady and a little girl in heals.
Rose wore a beautiful blue, full length dress with small jewels on it. Aleigha wore a puffy white dress with a blue sash at the waist. I smile at my beautiful girls, proud I get to escort them to the ball.
"Shall we go?" Rose asks, pleased with my reaction. When I don't reply she searches for my attention, "Marcus? Can you talk?"
"Uh, Yeah. You look beautiful." Turning pink at the comment she takes Aleigha's hand out of nervous habit. "You too Aleigha."
"Why Thank You Marky," she acts sophisticated.
Entering the large country club's great hall an orchestra was playing and a man in a suit was singing Sinatra songs along with some other hits I didn't know to well. Aleigha ran off to play with Joe's children. Quite a few couples were on the dance floor but most of them were chatting amongst each other.
"Marcus!" My mother comes to great me with a kiss on the cheek. "and Rachel."
"It's Rose, mother." I correct her but ignoring me she rambles on about how Ellie Nickson is just dying to meet me. "Mother, I'm not interested in meeting Ellie. Now if you'll excuse us, I'd like to dance with my girlfriend." I take Rose's hand, leading her to the dance floor just as they start to play One Republic's Come Home.
"Rose?" I softly call.
"Yes, Marcus?" She pulls away enough to look at me.
"What would you think about getting married?" I ask her. She huffed a laugh,
"Are you serious?"
"I don't know... We aren't getting any younger and I'm ready to settle down, I guess." I shrug.
"We've only been seeing each other for a month, Mark." She reminds me.
"But think about it. Can you see us together... raising Aleigha together." I ask. She looked deep in thought. "Tell me what your thinking."
"I guess so. I've always lived day by day... dealing with every day problems. Never really wanting to look into the future. But with you... I can, I guess. I mean not exactly right now, but later on, yes." She tells me the answer that made my heart whole.
The song ended and we stepped away from the dance floor running into my mother and a attractive blonde woman. She wore a green flowing dress. Her hair was pinned in a perfect curled bun.
"MARCUS! WONDERFUL! You can meet Ellie Nickson. Ellie this is my son, Marcus. Marcus this is Ellie." my mother introduces us completely ignoring Rose.
Ouch.
-Rose-
Wow. This was low. Lower than Low.
Molly (Marcus's Mother) was trying to hook up Marcus with another girl named Ellie, in front of my face!
"Uh Nice to meet you," You could tell he felt awkward. "Ellie, this is my girlfriend, Rose." He fixes the problem as best he could.
"Nice to meet you." she held out her hand and lightly shook mine. Her hand was so small and boney, it was a bit scary.
"Oh no she isn't, Marcus." Molly says with a sweet smile.
"Excuse me?" I ask what we are all thinking.
"Ellie, don't worry about Rylie, she's nothing." she says in a low tone like I can't hear her.
"You know I can here you, Mrs. Walters?" I quickly state.
"Mother, her name is Rose. And We need to speak. Now. Alone." he grabs her sleeve and pulls her away, leaving Ellie and I alone. We stood in silence for a while before I break it.
"I'm going to have to excuse myself to the restroom," I quickly walk away, but on my way I hear Mark and Molly in the coat room.
"... I don't even know what your doing with her." Molly pouts.
"I love her, Mother. You wouldn't understand," Marcus implies.
"I do understand. I understand that you have a big heart and wanted to help out that charity case of a mother and her mutt of a daughter. But you don't have to go off and date her-" Molly hissed.
"Mom, you gotta stop. She has troubles but don't say that, especially about Aleigha."
"She's no good-" She quickly stopping when she sees me in the doorway.
Tears fill my eyes as I turn around but get stopped, obviously, like one of those really bad romance movies.
"Rose!"
"No Marcus. You should know as well as anyone else that I can take care of myself and Aleigha by my own. I am NOT a charity case-"
"Wine?" a Waiter asked.
"No," said Marcus without blinking.
"Yes." I take the wine and the waiter leaves. I pour it on his head. "I can't believe I trusted you. We are done here."
"Mommy?" We both turn to Aleigha's voice.
"Come on sweetie, we are going." I pick her up.
"But Marky!-"
"Marky has other plans honey." With that we left him standing there broken hearted and covered in wine.
Good... feel the pain.
