Mattress Maintenance and Care

I discuss the importance of good mattress care and also give ways to ensure that one's mattress lasts as long as possible.
How well and properly a person cares for his or her mattress is a large factor in how long it will last and provide comfort and good sleep.

Mattresses should always be put on top of a sturdy base or foundation. This often prevents sagging and contributes to the comfort of the bed. Many mattress types should be rotated or flipped about every one to three years to ensure even wear.

Not rotating or flipping the mattress may result in the leaving of body impressions or peaks and valleys. Also, two sided mattresses should be flipped two times a year.

Folding or bending the mattress should be avoided, as should unequal wear in one area of the bed. If you clean your mattress, do not let it get too wet or let water seep inside to the upholstery. If this happens, mold and mildew can and often will develop. Instead, clean the mattress with a vacuum or spot clean it with a mild cleanser and a slightly damp cloth. Mattress protectors, of course, help prevent stains and soiling of the ticking or outer cover.

When a mattress no longer feels supportive and comfortable or causes pain, and flipping does not help, the mattress should be replaced with a new one. A mattress that needs replacement is often characterized by springs that can be felt poking through the upholstery layer, visible sagging, sink holes, lumpiness, and a high amount of squeaking.

Mattress can last as long as 15 years with regular use. Innerspring beds tend to be the least durable type of bed, while memory foam, latex and especially air beds, perform better.

Taking good care of your mattress and following the manufacturer's instructions can add at least a few years to the life of your bed.
