When an elderly woman puts her life savings of $1million American dollars and Israeli shekels inside her old mattress and it is thrown out with the trash, by a well meaning but now frantic daughter and three rubbish dumps are put off limits, mattresses become the main topic of the day.

An Italian man claimed he was using an inflatable mattress in order to get a good night’s sleep. The mattress contained several pounds of cocaine.

$3,000 was stolen from a Curry Walk resident, Central District police reported. A burglar entered the woman’s home and uncovered the cash neatly tucked under her mattress.

A happily reclining man on an inflatable mattress around 60 yards from the shore at Presque Isle Bay in the north-west area of the state, late at night, was picked up by the Coast Guard. Immediately the man was handcuffed and taken into custody. He had failed to complete his probationary requirements over a theft conviction and the police were looking for him.

In Weston-super-Mare police arrested a man who had thieved a mattress from a local outlet store, Weston Mercury. The man was carting the mattress home in full view, strapped on his car.

Three year-old Ariana Soto accidentally shot her two year-old brother, Ruben Soto III, in the chest with a .45-caliber Glock handgun. The children’s mother was in different part of the apartment at the time of the accident. The children’s father was at work.

The wounded boy was later pronounced dead after being taken to Kern Medical Center.

The gun was in a holster between the mattress and box spring, said Bakersfield police Sgt Greg Terry. "This gun was for self defense and ready to fire".

It is a crime punishable by up to three years imprisonment as a felony, or up to a year in prison as a misdemeanor, to not store a firearm in a way that the parent or guardian reasonably should know "that a child (could) gain access to the firearm".

Mattress Trivia:
A University of California in San Diego did a recent study that concluded that more time in bed could improve problem-solving abilities for a great majority of people.

They should throw themselves into the activity with great gusto and approaching the bed just the same as they would when they were curling up for the night at home".
