Massage Tips and Techniques
- The first thing you need to do is create a little relaxing ambiance, before you start massaging a person. The right amount of light can create a relaxing atmosphere, that will deepen the experience of massage for the person whom you are giving a massage to.
- You can keep one small light on, in the room. If you wish to prepare the place better, light some candles in the room. Make sure the candles are at a safe distance from you and the person you are giving massage to. You can sprinkle few drops of a relaxing essential oil if you like. Avoid playing any sort of music, as the person you are giving massage to, might prefer the silence better.
- Ask the person to lie down on a firm and comfortable surface. The surface can be a floor mat or a comfortable bed. The person should lie on their belly.
- If you are giving a full body massage then start from the feet and slowly progress to torso, face and finally scalp.
- While giving a person massage therapy make sure you apply the right pressure, you can ask the person if the pressure is right, and increase or decrease it accordingly.
- Start with slow circular motion and relax the body part you are working on. After this, use your fingers on the special areas where you feel the person is feeling stressful. Finally, press the knots (tight areas) in the body. You can use your palms, fingers in a pressing or circular motion. You can also use the kneading motion.
- Just be a little sensitive, while using these massage techniques. Treat another person's body as if treating your own. Use the techniques in the right areas, and avoid kneading or too much pressure techniques in sensitive areas. For example use thumb pressing technique along spine, but do not use kneading on the spine. Stick to the circular massage technique, for most body areas.
- This way you can give a person a dry massage, which is relaxing. But, if you are finding it difficult to glide your palms or fingers along another person's body, then you can use a little amount of olive oil with lavender oil in a proportion of 10:2 respectively. Olive oil is an excellent massage oil, while lavender essential oil has a herbal and relaxing scent.
- After you are done massaging the whole body or a particular part, to further relax a person, use some stretching techniques. This should be done with care, and if you are not sure first, then try these stretches on yourself and then on another person's body. You can perform neck flexes, quadriceps stretch, shoulder stretch, triceps stretches, etc. These stretching exercises are mostly performed after a physical workout, but after a massage give the person these stretches while he/she is lying down. You can ask them to lie on their back while stretching. Perform a stretch and hold it for ten seconds, then slowly release the body part.
- This was the final stage of massaging. After the massage is finished, let the person lie down for minimum 10 minutes so that he/she can relax even more. If the person has gone to sleep, then let them have a short nap.
