Maria's Secret

Enjoy!!
Students from schools across New York flooded their way into the Beacon theater. They were all anxious to see the spectacular performances their schoolmates were about to display. The theater was overflowing with laughter and idle chatter, and as the mc made his short introduction the crowd soon became silent.

Mariah Wildes was sitting backstage, getting ready to perform her dance. When she heard the cheering from the crowd, she took a deep breath and looked at her reflection in the mirror. Mariah was stunning. She was tall and slim, with a curvaceous body. Her eyes, hazel in color, were glistening jewels. She had dark, curly hair that fell down to her face and full pink lips. Mariah was a very sociable and positive person. She had a passion for dancing and was a very creative at that. Her name was common at school and she was once awarded student of the year for her school spirit and excellent academic records.

Mariah heard her name being called out by the mc and she went to the stage. She did a very good performance and got a huge applause in the end. She returned backstage feeling content and proud of herself. She saw that painters had arrived and were busily making small adjustments to their paintings that were about to be showcased. There was a certain painting that caught Mariah's eye. She thought it was breath-taking. She moved in closer to take another look and asked a dark-skinned young man who was near it "Is this yours?"

He smiled proudly and replied "Yes."
"It's beautiful."
"Thank you."Mariah was blown away by the painting and began asking the young man further questions about it. During a small space of time they learned a bit about each other and decided to meet again. Later that night Mariah couldn't stop thinking about the young man, Caleb. He was indeed handsome. He had light brown skin and brown eyes to match. He was tall and well-built and had the brightest smile.

Mariah and Caleb planned to meet out of Manhattan at a small smoothie place and it was there they found interest in each other. Mariah began to skip dance classes and use all of her free time to be with Caleb. She always asked that they meet out-of-town. Caleb was curious about this, but he never bothered to inquire why. When she began coming home later than usual, her father questioned her whereabouts. She used petty excuses like her dance class ended late, or she had extra studying to do at the library. Mariah wanted no one to know about her secret meetings with Caleb, and certainly not her father.

Mariah's father was somewhat of a stern man and demanded that she focused on school before anything else. Her father walked around with a huge racial chip on his shoulder. He disliked people of Caleb's color and wanted nothing to do with them. If Mariah had dark-colored friends, they were not allowed to step foot on her families property. So with fear of her father destroying what she and Caleb had, she never told a soul.

One day in dance class, the teacher noticed that Mariah was absent with no excuse again. She decided to take the issue to Mariah's father and find out if he knew about his daughter's sudden absences. Mr. Wildes was shocked when he heard about this. He was disappointed that Mariah had lied to him. The following day, Mr. Wildes called one of his friends from the sheriff department and asked that he secretly followed Mariah around to find out what she was up to. To the officer's luck, Mariah had planned to meet Caleb that day. He trailed behind her in his black Nissan Altima until she reached a town called Harlem. There the officer was alarmed at what he saw.

Later in the day, the officer came back with his report and told Mr. Wildes that his daughter was sneaking around with a colored boy. Mr. Wildes was fuming. He immediately asked the police department to find out who the colored boy was. Soon after he had found out everything he needed to know, he went out to find Caleb. He searched for a while, until he located Caleb's house. He knocked on the door and coincidentally Caleb was home.

"Are you Caleb McConnell?" Mr. Wildes asked in a harsh unsettling voice.
"Yes." replied Caleb
"I want to make this short and to the point."Instantaneously, Mr. Wildes collared Caleb with his left hand and held his Magnum Revolver under his jacket in his right. "Stay away from my daughter." He spoke softly, but his words came out intensive.
"What are you talking about?" Caleb struggled to loosen Mr. Wilde's grip.
"My daughter, Mariah, has better things to do with her life than be with you. Keep away from her. Don't talk to her, don't call her; pretend like she doesn't even exist in your world. If I find out that you're still with her, I will hurt you so bad that you might not live to see another day." Mr. Wildes flashed Caleb a look at his revolver, making sure that he got the message, and then walked away. Caleb stood in the doorway in disbelief. His body was cold and shaky.

A few days later Mariah was supposed to meet Caleb, but he never showed up. She was concerned and called him several times until he finally answered. He asked that she meet him in the park at 10pm. Mariah was worried and wondered why Caleb wanted to meet so late. When she arrived she saw Caleb's silhouette in the dim park lights. She ran up to him and hugged him, but he didn't hug back. She frowned and pulled back.
"What's wrong?" She could see the melancholy expression on his face.
"Mariah, I don't want anything to do with you. You're useless to me. We're over." He said as he looked into her eyes which were forming tears. With that he walked away and disappeared behind the trees before Mariah could say a word.

Mariah was speechless. She felt weak and hopeless. Hot tears streamed down her face and her eyes burnt with every tear they let out. She felt like someone had ripped her heart out and stomped on it. She ran to where Caleb left, hoping to see him waiting for her; hoping to hear him say that it was all a joke. He wasn't there; only trees and darkness. Mariah ran and ran until she reached the train station. She pushed through the crown of busy New Yorkers and stood at the edge of the train tracks waiting for a train to go by. She could see one quickly making its way through the tunnel. As it moved closer, Mariah opened her arms, took a deep breath and jumped.
