Managing Diabetes Effectively

For the effective management of diabetes, three pronged strategy should be put to use. Along with proper diet and medication, adequate exercise goes a long way in allowing the patient to lead a longer and healthier life.
Diabetes has emerged as the silent killer globally with devastating human, social and economic repercussions. This epidemic claims as many lives annually as HIV/AIDS does. But the only thing that sets diabetes apart from HIV/AIDS is, that it can be managed, allowing the patient to live a longer and healthier life.

Controlling blood sugar is pivotal to control diabetes as it’s important to keep the blood sugar level within the acceptable range. Awareness is the key to manage diabetes effectively. If one knows what make our blood sugar rise or fall, half the battle is won.

Correct and Healthy food habits are the cornerstone of managing diabetes efficiently. Quantity of food and time of eating along with what one eats decides the level of sugar in your blood. Eating the same amount of food at regular intervals can prove to be very effective as blood sugar rises right after the meals and then ebbs away after some time. Eating approximately same amount of carbohydrates at each meal will aid in maintaining a stable sugar level. Eating too less or too much can be dangerous.

With daily exercise, you can help your body to convert the sugar in energy and increases its response to insulin. The exercise can either be doing household jobs or working out in gym or running on a tread mill. The harder your workout, more lasting will be the effect. It’s essential to consult your doctor before you start exercising as he will help you in planning your diet and medication while you exercise, especially insulin intake. Discontinue exercise immediately when you experience difficulty in breathing, faintness or any kind of chest pain.

Proper dosage at right intervals is very important when it comes to medication of diabetes. At times, medicines taken for conditions other than diabetes can disturb blood sugar level. Proper storage of Insulin and regular check of its expiry date is a must. Consult your doctor regularly so that the dosage and timings of medication can be adjusted if required.
