Man United Go Level On Points With Chelsea

A round up of last night's matches, and a look into tonight's round of matches in the Barclays Premier League.
Manchester United beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 at Old Trafford last night, to go on level points with Chelsea, after 17 games played. Chelsea though, have a game in hand and they host Portsmouth at Stamford Bridge tonight. Chelsea can go 3 points clear if they manage to end their 4 game winless streak and beat a Pompey side that is looking revived under Avram Grant. Avram Grant was unceremoniously sacked from Chelsea after they lost to Manchester United on penalties in the 2008 Champions League final. He will be looking to prove a point to Roman Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea, and will have his troops all charged up.

United had a fairly easy game against Wolves, as Wayne Rooney scored from the penalty spot, and then Nemanja Vidic and Luis Antonio Valencia completed the scoring. This was a welcome 3 points for United after their last game, a home defeat to in form Aston Villa. Villa, meanwhile, continued their hot streak and beat Sunderland 2-0 at the Stadium of Light to go third, leapfrogging Arsenal.

Arsenal can regain 3rd spot if they beat Burnley at Turf Moor tonight, a feat managed only by one team so far - Wigan Athletic. Burnley's home form is very impressive and they've already beaten the likes of Everton and the mighty Manchester United there earlier in the season. In another crucial game, Tottenham Hotspur welcome Manchester City to White Hart Lane, with both teams showing a great deal of inconsistency in the recent past.

Both teams are aiming for 4th spot, but neither of them seem to be taking their chances. Spurs followed their impressive 9-1 win against Wigan with draws against Aston Villa and Everton, and then a shock defeat to Wolves over the weekend. Manchester City on the other hand have lost only one game all season, but have drawn 8 of their last 9 games, the only win coming against Chelsea. The winner of this game will have the upper hand, but both of them have been left in the trail of Aston Villa recently, in the hunt for that elusive 4th spot.

Speaking of which, Liverpool play Wigan Athletic at Anfield, hoping to end their torrid run of form. The season has gone from bad to worse for them with the hopes of the title long gone, after their impressive results last season. Failure to win tonight would surely put Benitez's job in danger, as the fans are seeming unrealistically patient with the manager so far. Beating the likes of Wigan at home is what can be the perfect tonic for Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres and co. to revive their faltering season.
