Maltodextrin Dangers

Maltodextrin is an artificial sweetener which is used in various types of foods. There are a few negative effects as a result of overuse. Through this article let us discuss the dangers of maltodextrin.
There are many artificial food additives, available in the market, that are supposedly inexpensive and used to enhance the taste of prepackaged foods. Maltodextrin is one such artificial sweetener that is made from carbohydrates. This food additive is a sweet polysaccharide, which belongs to the dextrin family. The molecules of glucose are linked together to form a polymer molecule of carbohydrates. Maltodextrin is a by-product which is formed as a result of hydrolysis of starch, a process where the molecules of starch are broken down with the help of enzymes or acids. This food additive, which comes in the form of a white powder and has a sweet taste, is made from starchy foods like corn, potato or rice. Before we see what are the negative effects of including maltodextrin, let us take a look at its uses and benefits.

Maltodextrin - A Snapshot

Maltodextrin is an artificial sweetener which is safe for use by individuals suffering from diabetes and also by those who are trying to lose weight. As compared to sugar and any other food sweeteners, maltodextrin is comparatively lower in calories. One gram of maltodextrin contains approximately 2 to 3 calories only. This food additive is easily digested by the body and is gluten free. It is a key ingredient in various foodstuffs like soups, cookies, desserts, ice creams, puddings, and sauces etc. Post workout supplements, bodybuilding supplements, and weight gain powders that are used by body builders also contain traces of maltodextrin. Since it is easily digestible by the body, it aids in the quick absorption and distribution of nutrients throughout the body. Though the ill effects of this artificial sweetener have not yet come to light, there are some maltodextrin dangers, which can be caused as a result of intolerance to starch products or due to excess use.

Maltodextrin Side Effects

An overuse of food products containing maltodextrin can lead to a number of health implications. Though there is no proof as yet, researchers have conducted a survey among people who use prepackaged foods, whose main ingredient is maltodextrin. It had been observed that these individuals showed signs caused due to maltodextrin intolerance. Given below are some of the side effects of maltodextrin, which may be mild or severe in nature, depending on the consumption:
  • One of the most common side effects that can be seen in individuals who suffer from starch intolerance is allergies. Individuals who suffer from celiac diseases show allergic reactions like skin rashes, itching, wheezing, asthma etc.
  • Some individuals may also experience a bloating sensation in the abdomen and flatulence as a result of the side effects of maltodextrin. The individuals may also suffer from problems in digestion, diarrhea and in some cases even constipation.
  • Another danger of maltodextrin, especially in body builders is rebound hypoglycemia. This condition results to a sudden drop in the levels of blood sugar due to excess workout.
  • High carbohydrates in the body can cause an insulin spike. This may lead to the excess storage of energy in the form of fat, which can result in unhealthy weight gain. This is particularly harmful as it can pose a threat to the cardiovascular system.
  • Some researchers also believe that maltodextrin can also cause tooth decay and other dental problems like plaque, tartar etc. This is because the excessive sweetness of this product, combined with improper oral hygiene can lead to tooth decay, caries and gum problems.
  • An impact of high maltodextrin can be seen on the digestive system. Once this food additive (an ingredient in junk food) enters the bloodstream, it relaxes the digestive tract and stalls digestion. The body then craves for food like junk, that are quickly absorbed and do not require digestion. Craving for junk food can make the digestive system lazy and the person becomes overweight, due to overdose of maltodextrin in the body.
  • Other negative effects of maltodextrin include nausea induced vomiting, headaches, which may range from mild to severe, an upset stomach, dizziness and fainting spells. Some individuals may also experience side effects like generalized body weakness, fatigue and body ache.
It is better to avoid long-term usage of this alternative sweetener to prevent any health complications. In case you notice some irregularities in your body, visit a health care provider for treatment. Take care!
