Male Sexual Problems and Treatments

Male sexual problems are commonly reported by men above 40 years of age. This article discusses common male sexual problems with an emphasis on erectile dysfunction since it is the most frequently reported problem. Causes, treatment, solutions along with general precautions have also been discussed.
Sexual problems are fairly common in men and in most cases these can be easily treated. In simple terms, sexual problems in men refer to any problem that prevents a man or the couple from enjoying satisfying sexual activity. Since a man’s sexual response cycle has four phases - excitement, plateau, orgasm and resolution; any problem that impedes the normal functioning of this cycle can be defined as a sexual problem in men.

The three major types of sexual problems are –

• Low libido (sexual interest)

• Erectile dysfunction or impotence (difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection)

• Ejaculatory dysfunction – (Premature, delayed or inhibited ejaculation)

Of these, erectile dysfunction which is commonly called impotence, is one of the most commonly reported sexual problems wherein men face the consistent inability to achieve or maintain an erection of the penis sufficient to complete sexual intercourse or any other chosen sexual activity. It is estimated that one in ten men suffer from erectile dysfunction but only a few receive treatment. Erectile dysfunction is reported more in men above 40 years of age. This is because elderly men are more likely to suffer from conditions that may impede the physiology of sexual response, however age has nothing to do with sexual problems.

Causes of sexual problems in men

The cause of sexual problems in men could be physical or psychological problems.

• Physical causes may include physical and/or medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart and vascular (blood vessel) disease, neurological disorders, hormonal imbalances, chronic diseases such as kidney or liver failure, side effect of prescribed drugs, smoking, alcoholism, and drug abuse

• Psychological causes may include performance anxiety, work or home related stress, depression, sexual boredom, marital or relationship problems, worries about sexual orientation, and effects of a past sexual trauma.

How to overcome sexual problems related to erectile dysfunction?

Thanks to the advancements in medical science, various treatment methods for male sexual problems have been developed. However, before you visit a doctor, it is advised you bring certain lifestyle changes such as stop smoking, reducing alcohol intake, reduce stress and anxiety through meditation, yoga etc, and stay fit and slim with regular physical exercise.

When lifestyle changes fail to produce effective results, your doctor may recommend oral erectile dysfunction treatment drugs such as Viagra (Sildenafil), Cialis (Tadalafil) and Levitra (Vardenafil). Of these drugs, Viagra is the oldest and one of the most trusted drugs. In response to sexual stimulation, the action of oral impotence drugs dilates the smooth blood vessels in the penis so that more blood may rush in. The resulting engorgement of penis with blood causes men to achieve hard and firm erection sufficient to complete sexual intercourse. Oral impotence drugs are the first-line therapy for impotence treatment and are considered to be effective in most men.

Other erectile dysfunction treatment methods include – vacuum pumps, penile injection, hormone replacement therapy and surgical implants. These methods are understandably not as convenient as oral erectile dysfunction treatment drugs.

Precautions to take while using oral erectile dysfunction treatment drugs

Some of the most important precautions include:

• Always consult a doctor and take the medicine in the prescribed dosage.

• Never use impotence drugs in conjunction with any form of nitrate medicine.

• Use ED treatment drugs with caution when taking alpha-blocker medicines

• Do not use ED treatment drugs if you have normal sexual functioning.

• ED treatment drugs should not be used in men in whom sexual activity is considered risky.
