Malar Rash

Malar rash is also known as butterfly rash because of the way it appears, mainly on the face of a person. It derives its name from a Greek word which means "cheek". These rashes appear on the bridge of the nose and it appears in the shape of a butterfly. This skin rash is either red or purple in color. They are scaly to a mild extent. This rash has sharp edges but fortunately, they are not itchy like other rashes. Given below are some of the main causes and also what are the symptoms and treatment for it.

Causes

The causes are mainly some diseases which leads to the formation of such rashes. The causes are listed below.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
This is a chronic autoimmune connective tissue disease, that usually affects several parts of the human body, mainly the body cells and tissues. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus affects the heart, the various joints of the body and even the lungs, the skin, the blood vessels, nervous system and the kidneys. This is more common in women than in men and this disease might be either due to genetic reasons or due to environmental problems like the UV rays. This disease might also occur due to certain drug reactions in the body, leading to the typical lupus butterfly rash.

Rosacea
Rosacea is a chronic skin disease that causes the face of a person to swell up and turn red. If a person keeps blushing more than required, then that is the first sign of rosacea. Also, if the face of the person has a constant sunburn or blushed look, that does not go away, no matter how much you try, then that's a sign that the person is suffering from rosacea. Besides the redness, the person might also get some pimple like structures on the skin. These might be either small and solid or they might also be pus filled. The blood vessels on the face, also become very prominent.

Lyme Disease
This is a disease caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. This is a disease caused due to ticks which mainly comes from mice. Lyme disease affects the skin, the heart, the eyes, the central and peripheral nervous system, and also the musculoskeletal system.

Dermatomyositis
This is a connective tissue disease, that causes inflammation of the muscles and also of the skin. There are however, no known causes of this disease, but some doctors suggests that it might be due to some viral infection. Some drugs which are used to control the blood cholesterol level in the body, can also lead to dermatomyositis.

Seborrhea
Lack of proper nutrition and a weak immune system are the main causes of this disease. This is basically dandruff that many people suffer from. Greasy scalp, or scaling of the skin, mainly in the areas of the scalp and the nasolabial fold, the central part of the face, under the breast, are the main symptoms of this disease.

Symptoms

Listed below are some of the symptoms so that if a person is showing any of them, then he or she can be taken to the doctor immediately for proper treatment.
  • Rash appears on the cheeks of the person and also, across the bridge of the nose, making it look like a butterfly
  • The rashes are red or purple in color, making the skin look as if it's got a permanent sunburn or blush
  • The rash can be either flat or raised and it gets worse when exposed to sunlight.
Treatment

There are several treatment options, but the only thing that you have to do is going to the doctor at the correct time. Whenever you notice that the person is showing some signs of this rash, then you should take them to the doctor immediately.
  • There are several steroid creams which are to be used on the rashes only if the doctor suggests. Do not take over-the-counter medicines. Always confirm with a doctor before you apply anything. These creams will help to reduce the itching and inflammation.
  • Avoid going out in the sunlight. The person should use sunscreen whenever they are out and protect their skin from the sun.
  • There is nothing like following a healthy diet. If a person is suffering from this rash, the best thing that they can do is boost their immune system. That can be done with the help of a healthy diet.
  • Also sleeping well and giving the body enough rest, is important. The most important thing is that the person should take in enough water. Water helps to flush out toxins from the body.
