Make a Glass Coffee Table out of Anything!

You can make a glass coffee table out of just about anything. All you need is a solid base for the foundation and a pane of glass to rest on top of it.
The coffee table is the centerpiece of any living room. It is the single piece of furniture that pulls the rest of the room together and gives the room a personal feel. The couch would not be as comfortable without the coffee table to rest drinks and food on, the television would not be as powerful if there were not unopened coffee table books sitting ignored in the middle of the room, and the dining room table would get far more use if the coffee table wasn’t inviting the family to eat in the living room every night.

It is because of the fact that the coffee table is such a central focal point for the room that many people have decided to take it a step further and go a little bit crazy with their coffee table designs. A unique and stylized coffee table will quickly bring character to the room and really make every one of your guests that come over say: "Wow, look at that coffee table." And isn’t that really what having them over is all about?

I’ve seen people make coffee tables to look like Nintendo game controllers, I’ve seen coffee tables that look like car engines, and I even have a coffee table in my house right now that is made from an old New England lobster trap. Does anyone else you know have a coffee table even close to one of these babies? I don’t think so. Let this article be a challenge to you, I want you to know that you can make a glass coffee table out of just about anything and it happens to be really easy to do. Interested? Good, here’s what you should do.

The first step is always the most difficult one. You need to come up with a design for your glass coffee table. What will your coffee table say about you and your home? Do you want it to be wild and fun like the game controller table (which was functional by the way) or do you want to look like a motor head like the car engine one? You have to think of something personal and highly customized so that the coffee table really screams out your personality. Or, just pick something you find really interesting (like lobsters) and make a coffee table around that.

Next you just go pick out a base for your coffee table. You can make your own base out of wood or something but I generally just like to head out to my local antique dealer and find a nice piece from there. Once you do that you can order a glass pane that is roughly the size of your base and get some rubber stoppers. Attach the pane of glass on top of the base using the rubber stoppers as dividers and viola: you now have a coffee table.
