Magnesium Chloride Uses

Magnesium chloride is a chemical compound, which is used for various purposes. Read on to know more...
Magnesium Chloride Uses
Magnesium chloride is chemically represented as MgCl2. It is a chemical compound formed with magnesium and chloride. It is usually obtained from sea water and is generally found in hydrated form. Magnesium chloride in its pure form is colorless, odorless, highly soluble in water and bitter to taste.

Use of Magnesium Chloride in Road Safety

Magnesium chloride in liquid form acts as an anti-icer on roadways. During winter months, it is sprayed on pavements before precipitation. As a result, snow and ice formation is reduced on the surface of the road. Thus, it prevents the vehicles from skidding and ensures road safety. Magnesium chloride is the more preferred anti-icer than sodium chloride because the former is a less corrosive substance, as compared to the latter, and does not cause much harm to plant life, road concrete or the steel electric poles on the roads. It is also used in crystalline form to de-ice sidewalks and driveways of home and offices. The crystals are applied, after precipitation, on the accumulated ice.

Use of Magnesium Chloride in Food Products

Magnesium chloride is a good coagulant that is used in the preparation of tofu. It is used along with magnesium sulfate to coagulate soy milk, from which tofu is made. Due to its nutritional value, magnesium chloride is one of the components of formula milk for infants.

Use of Magnesium Chloride in Dust Control

Magnesium chloride tends to absorb moisture from air. When it is applied in, either liquid or powdered form on dusty places, then the dust get suppressed on to the floor. Thus, it prevents small dust particles from spreading into the air. This is commonly used in places like excavation sites, indoor sport arenas, race courses etc.

Use of Magnesium Chloride in Hydrogen Storage

This usage of magnesium chloride is unparalleled by any other compound: the fact that it can store hydrogen gas is a unique property of this compound. A single molecule of ammonia is rich in hydrogen atoms. Ammonia can be absorbed on the surface of solid magnesium chloride as Mg(NH3)6Cl2. On application of mild heat, ammonia is easily released from magnesium chloride and when it is made to pass through a catalyst, hydrogen gas is obtained.

Use of Magnesium Chloride for Industrial Purposes

This compound is used in the manufacture of cement. Also, due to its non-combustible property, it is often used in various fireproof equipment. The textile and paper industries make use of it too.

Use of Magnesium Chloride as Medicine

Magnesium chloride is a rich source of magnesium. It is the most effective nutritional supplement supplying the body with magnesium. It can be taken in the form of tablets or capsules. Magnesium is essential for carrying out various bodily functions. Magnesium helps to strengthen our bones and teeth. It prevents blood clotting. It keeps a check on the blood pressure. Thus, a dose of magnesium chloride can protect us from contracting serious ailments like heart attack, osteoporosis, etc. However, patients with kidney disease should strictly avoid taking magnesium chloride. It is also not advisable for people with allergies.

The importance of magnesium chloride is not confined to its medicinal uses. Its wide applications in different sectors makes it a valuable chemical/mineral for human beings.
