Lymphoma is one of the four major types of cancers (other three being, leukemia, carcinoma, sarcoma). It is the cancer of the lymphocytes, i.e., the white blood cells found in the immune system of the body. We are aware that cancer is a disease that occurs when there is a sudden and abnormal growth of cancerous or malignant cells in the body. In case of lymphoma, these cells can develop in any part of the lymphatic system like in the spleen, in the thymus, the adenoids or in the lymph glands (or lymph nodes).

The exact cause of lymphoma is unknown, however, there are several factors like HIV infection, hepatitis B and C infection, exposure to toxins and chemicals, radiations, genetics, etc., that are believed to give rise to this condition. It is classified into two types: Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The exact difference between the two is visible only under a microscope. In case, the Reed-Sternberg cells are found in the body, the cancer is classified as Hodgkin's lymphoma; whereas if the Reed-Sternberg cells are absent, it is the non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Signs and Symptoms of Lymphoma in Adults

Enlargement of the lymph nodes is the most prominent lymphoma symptoms in adults. This condition occurs due to no known cause and specially the lymph nodes in neck, armpit and groin are found to enlarge. Secondly, weight loss without any reason, fever, susceptibility to infections, development of moles on body, etc. are some other warning signs of lymphoma and also all other types of cancer. it should be noted that Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma symptoms are similar as there is only a slight difference between the two types.

If the cancer originates under the skin, skin rashes or bumps are observed; if it originates in the abdomen, the person may experience nausea, vomiting, etc.; and in case it develops in the brain, the person may have difficulty in thinking and may experience constant headache. However, it should be noted that symptoms like fever, weight loss, chills, fatigue, weakness, enlargement of lymph nodes are found in case of all types of lymphoma cancer.

Sometimes, lymphoma is not easily identified as most of the symptoms are also found in case of other diseases. Therefore, it is essential to consult the doctor in case any signs are observed. The doctor will advise complete blood count test, X-ray, MRI, etc. for proper lymphoma diagnosis. When diagnosed with cancer, one can go for the classical cancer treatment like surgery, chemotherapy and radiations depending on the severity of the disease. The effectiveness of lymphoma treatment depends on several factors like the spread of disease (the stage to which it has reached), the person's age, immunity, etc.

Lastly, it should be noted that lymphoma can be treated if the symptoms are diagnosed at an early stage. This write-up is meant only for information and reference purposes. Take care!
