Lymphedema treatment comprises compression therapy, medications and physical therapy, these are widely used to minimize the swelling of the affected part. Read to know about some effective lymphedema treatments.
Before undergoing lymphedema treatment, the doctor is supposed to carefully examine the arm, and find out whether lymphedema is responsible for causing arm infections.
Swelling can also occur due to blood clots. In such cases, treatment given is different. Unfortunately, lymphedema treatment cannot cure this condition. However, these treatments can definitely help to minimize the swelling and pain.
Lymphedema patients are often asked to take antibiotics to control the infections. Certain supplements can improve this condition. Consult your physician before taking them, as they can cause side effects.
Excercise: Some set of exercises, prescribed by a therapist, can provide strength to the affected parts of the body. Light exercises such as moving the affected leg or arm can contribute a lot in improving the condition. These exercises help to move the accumulated fluid out of the affected limb. The physical activity should not make you feel tired, and can be increased gradually.
Massage: This is one of the most effective lymphedema treatments to activate the movements of the affected parts. Also known as manual lymph drainage, this technique helps the blocked lymph fluid to flow properly. People who have skin infections must avoid this special massage.
Compression: This is a standard treatment given to lymphedema patients. It involves wrapping the leg or arm with bandages to promote proper circulation of lymph fluid. Low stretch bandages help to remove the blockage and increase drainage.The bandage should be wrapped in a specific manner. A trained therapist can always guide you in this matter.
Pump Therapy: This therapy is also known as pneumatic compression, wherein you wear a sleeve around the leg or arm. The sleeve is attached to a air pump that inflates the sleeve, applying pressure on the limbs. As a result, the lymph fluid moves away from the toes and fingers, decreasing the swelling and relieving you from pain.
Surgery: If lymphedema is severe, doctors may advice you surgery. It involves removing excess tissue from the leg or arm. Using surgical methods, it is possible to decrease the size of the enlarged limb.
Compression garments: This form of lymphedema treatment includes usage of stockings (long sleeves) that are specially designed to compress the leg or arm to restore normal flow in lymphatic system. Once the swelling has reduced considerably by implementing the measures discussed above, doctors will advise you to wear these compression garments, to keep the swelling under control.
Skin care is very important during lymphedema treatments. Make sure that you clean the affected body part regularly so that it remains free of any kind of infection.
