Causes of Lower Abdominal and Back Pain
Kidney Stones: Accumulation of excess salts, calcium or uric acid in the kidneys give rise to kidney stones. If the amount of uric acid rises or if a person has an increased intake of calcium, it does not get washed out from the body, but gets converted into stones. The size of the kidney stone and the pain associated with it, is variable. Pain due to kidney stones begins in the lower abdomen and spreads around the groin and the back.
Pyelonephritis: It is an infection of the kidneys and the pelvis caused by bacteria. It is one of the types of nephritis. Pyelonephritis is observed in people suffering from urinary tract infection (UTI) or those having a history of it. Along with the abdominal pain and back pain, other symptoms like fever, painful urination, vomiting and headache are also observed.
Apart from these, pancreatitis and gallstones are the other diseases that cause stomach pain and back pain. However, there are certain diseases and disorders causing these symptoms, that differ according to the gender.

Miscarriage: Miscarriage is a natural termination of pregnancy caused due to a variety of reasons like trauma or uterine malformation. Among the several symptoms of miscarriage, bleeding is the foremost, which is followed by frequent abdominal pain, cramping and back pain.
Preterm labor: Preterm labor is labor that starts early, i.e., before completion of 37 weeks of pregnancy. The most prominent symptom of preterm labor is vaginal discharge. If preterm labor is not identified and stopped, it can result in premature birth. Vaginal spotting, bleeding, pelvic pain, lower abdominal pain and lower back pain are the symptoms of preterm labor.
Along with these, cramping during menstruation, placental abruption, ovarian cysts, etc. are the other causes of lower back pain accompanied with abdominal pain in women.
... in Men
Acute Prostatitis: It is the inflammation or infection of the prostate gland due to bacteria like E coli. The major symptoms of acute prostatitis are painful and urgency in urination, fever, chills, abdominal pain and lower back pain. It is a medical emergency and should be treated as soon as possible.
Seminal Vesiculitis: It is the inflammation of the seminal vesicles in men. Lower abdominal pain and backache are the symptoms of it.
All the aforementioned causes are medical emergencies and should not be ignored. If one experiences abdominal pain and back pain, he should consult the doctor immediately. Most of these diseases and disorders can be treated with the help of medications. However, some of them may even need hospitalization and surgery. It is better to seek medical advice and get the disease diagnosed and treated early to avoid further complications.
