Low Thyroid Treatment

Low thyroid treatment generally involves use of prescription medicines that are made up of synthetically prepared hormones.
Low thyroid, also known as hypothyroidism, refers to the body's inability to produce thyroid hormones in appropriate amounts. Thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) are the two hormones that are created in the thyroid gland. The primary reason behind poor thyroid levels is the malfunctioning of the thyroid gland. Although hypothyroidism is not a cause of great concern, one really cannot ignore it as inactive thyroid often makes a person constipated. Diet
Many times, it is observed that iodine deficiency is the main culprit behind hypothyroidism. This is because the thyroid gland depends upon iodine to manufacture these hormones in sufficient amounts. So, to stimulate thyroid production, it is essential that food is cooked in iodized salt only. Sea foods such as fish are also a good source of iodine. So including them in the diet can be helpful to manage hypothyroidism effectively. Taking iodine in the diet is imperative if the tests indicate low iodine levels in the body. Vitamin A rich food also assist to boost thyroid function, hence their inclusion in the diet can keep thyroid disorders under control.

Patients should also stay away from certain foods and beverages as they are known to suppress thyroid function. Caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea have to be either avoided or their consumption has to be minimized considerably. Also, one has to reduce intake of vegetables like broccoli, kale, cabbage and sweet potatoes. This is because these vegetables, although high in vitamins reduce the body's ability to absorb iodine properly. It is also necessary to stay away from soy products as well as calcium supplements as they too contribute in hindering iodine absorption.

Supplements
Studies show that zinc, selenium, vitamin D and vitamin E supplements support thyroid function. So taking them in appropriate dosages is certainly going to be useful in treating low thyroid. Those not comfortable taking these supplements can always have foods that are high in these minerals. Basically these minerals are essential for conversion of T4 into T3 hormone. Therefore taking them in supplemental form would benefit to reduce hypothyroidism symptoms. Foods rich in zinc and selenium are nuts, bananas, tuna and avocados.

Bladderwrack
Bladderwrack, a seaweed (brown algae) is one of the best natural remedies for hypothyroidism. Iodine is found abundantly in bladderwrack and hence its use for the thyroid disorders is beneficial. Bladderwrack when taken in capsule form helps to ease hypothyroidism symptoms.

Keep in mind that hypothyroidism treatment has to be followed for the rest of the life because the thyroid gland is no longer in a position to produce thyroid hormones in sufficient amounts. So be it pills or natural remedies, one has to follow this practice lifelong to prevent insufficient thyroid levels.
