Low Risk Home Based Internet Businesses
The sales letters promise one thing, but the reality for many budding online entrepreneurs is quite different. For this reason, choosing a low risk approach to developing an online business is a better long term option for most home-based startups. Learn more here.
Given the plethora of bogus home business 'opportunities' out there, it's no wonder many people become very cautious in their approach to finding out what works online. Whether that caution comes with the first disappointment, the third, or the tenth, it nonetheless begins to creep up when yet another promised home business outcome fails to materialize.
There are a number of problems that lead to this scenario. At the most basic level, there are some programs that have the odds stacked against them. I would classify network marketing amongst these, at least for the beginner - which is usually who they're aimed at. There is a lack of differentiation with the products, which in any case are usually overpriced to the point they are difficult to sell at retail. That leaves recruiting as the only viable way to earn an income. And recruiting is notoriously hard, especially if you are a complete beginner yourself.
A different set of problems arise when sorting through the options that are viable as a home based internet business. Affiliate marketing, revenue generated though advertising, selling hard goods, creating information products, setting up membership sites - these can all be good income streams. Most marketers actually use a combination of these, to create what is popularly called, 'multiple streams of income'.
The problem for a beginner, is that each of these has their own learning curve. And whilst it is possible to earn a little bit from them by applying general principles, to really make a good income from any of these streams requires both a commitment of time and effort. It takes time to really develop an understanding of the processes involved, the market you choose to enter, and the techniques that lift any income from each from mediocre to good. And fundamental to that commitment of time and effort, is the learning curve that needs to be mastered to put the systems that each require in place.
There is no getting away from the fact that there is some technical knowledge in each aspect of these online business that needs to be mastered. Fortunately, there are a lot of good products out there that address this problem. But it is easy to get distracted by the endless array of products on offer, flooding into your inbox like some weekly tropical storm. They all speak to a 'pain', centered around not making enough money, not having enough traffic, and other concerns of a fledgling business. It's easy to suspend judgment and pull out the credit card, especially if you're faced with a glitch in the road where you really do need to develop your own knowledge to implement the next stage in wherever your new home business is at.
The danger is when those products represent a fork in the road that is not quite aligned with what you've already developed. That can lead to a lack of action due to confusion, overwhelm - or unfocused action that doesn't take your business forward.
Of course, if you don't yet have a business, it can most definitely lead to a confusion where the first step is never taken.
The emphasis in the title of this article is low risk home based internet businesses. Because, if you're just starting out, and feel jaded by all the seemingly conflicting information, low risk is a sensible option. It gives you the opportunity to develop an online presence without spending a lot of money, whilst you 'learn on the job'. It also gives you the time to find what suits your own talents and interests. And its much easier to build a business on your strengths than on your weaknesses.
So, what is a low risk, low cost way to start a home based internet business? Building a content rich website. A content-rich website gives you credibility, and is potentially a source of great traffic if it is built with basic search engine optimization in mind. This may take more time than starting out with affiliate marketing and pay-per-click advertising with no website, but it gives you a strong base from which these other income streams can be developed later. It also starts to take all the theory and ground it into the reality of your own experience. With your own website, you're much less vulnerable to cookie-cutter 'opportunities' that are very difficult to make any serious money with - either now or later.
