Love Story of The Century - Part 1

This is a really sad love story about a girl who lost her heart to someone who in turn tried to take advantage of that love but had he really tried to take advantage or was there more to the story.
I am not quite sure how or where to start this story but it is such a heart breaking tale that I feel it would be a waste not to share it with you. I think I will start off by telling you about the day my soon-to-be-husband proposed to me and took me home to meet his mother, but before that let me introduce myself to you: My name is Christi but everyone calls me Chris, that is, except for Matron, who insists my name is too beautiful to spoil with nicknames. Oh hell, am I going off the topic? Anyway back to where I was, everyone calls me Chris and I am just nineteen years old and very much in love with the most wonderful guy alive. Here goes.....

It was a perfect day, the sky was a clear blue with a few fluffy white clouds scattered about. The damp green grass tickled my barefeet and on an impulse I stretched out my hands and began to spin. I know, it was childish of me, after all I was eighteen and not two but the sensation of freedom was intoxicating.

I dropped to the ground and lay on the grass, grinning widely as I imagined the reaction of Matron if she had to see me right now.
Matron -who ran the orphanage I had been forced to attend- still lived in the Victorian times and would have been scandalized to see me dressed in a tight jeans and checked shirt. (typical country-girl attire) For Matron only drab long dresses in dull shades would do for a young unmarried girl. I grimaced remembering my time in the orphanage, Matron was in no way a tyrant but I think she forgot what it is like to be young, either that or she was never young or so I thought at the time.

"Hello there," a voice startled me out of my reverie.
I looked up and my heart skipped a few beats, for there in front of me stood the most good looking, no wait, good looking is too inadequate a word for him. He was and still is the most handsome guy I have ever laid eyes upon.
"Hi," I answered shyly and got to my feet.
"Happy Birthday angel!" he came over and gave me a hug.
"Thanks James," he took my hand as he led me to sit in the shade of a tree, facing the stream. For a while we both sat in silence. It was not an oppressive silence but rather a comfortable silence. I could see he wanted to say something but I didn't push him. I knew he would tell me when he was ready and so I watched the water flowing by in the river and listened to the sweet music of nature.
"Don't you just love the music of nature, James?" I sighed. "The sound of the gushing river, the birds chirping, the frogs croaking..."
James chuckled, "That's what I like about you, Chris, you find enjoyment in the simplest of pleasures."
"Yeah Chris, the music of nature is lovely but not as lovely as you. I love you angel."
"I love you too, James."
"Chris will you marry me?" He blurted suddenly. "I can see you're shocked, I'm sorry. I didn't mean for it to come out quite like that. Is it too soon for you? Cause if it is..."
"Shh James, no it's not too soon and I would love to marry you." He leaned over and hugged me and I hugged him back. Wow! He asked me to marry him. I don't believe it. I doubt I could be any happier than this!
James moved back but kept his arm around my shoulders.
"There's another thing I wanted to tell you angel, my mother came back today." James was always telling me about his mother and I couldn't wait to meet her. She was like a living legend, what with having outlived three husbands, but what I most admired about her was her ability to be strong and to find the will to carry on living even after the only love of her life betrayed her. At that time I did not know the full story, just that the guy she lost her heart to tried to take advantage of her love. I think I would die if I had to live without James.
"Oh that's wonderful James, when can I meet your mother?"
"Today if you like, angel, I'll take you to meet her after we return from the movies." James was taking me out for a late lunch and than for a movie to celebrate my eighteenth birthday.
"I should get back to my chores, angel. See you at four."
"See ya," I waved as he disappeared from my view.
Did you enjoy the story and would you like to read on further?
