For what seemed like hours I waited on Michael to get back from talking to God. When he finally returned I was lying on the bed in the hotel room. He came in and smirked, "I have good news. God has said that as long as you keep good faith till your eighteenth birthday you will be good. You are home free then to become a human and live your life till its fullest. I'm happy to see you free and happy, Ana. This is a good feeling that I haven't felt in centuries. Do you remember the Crusades?"
I nodded and he continued, "Well during that time I was acting as a Missionary in the Middle East. One of the Crusaders came in one evening with several wounds from battle. He had been stabbed in the side with a sword and it had punctured several of his organs. Well no one thought he would live. I was an angel but no one knew that. I got down on my hands and knees and prayed to God to heal that man. The man was a good soul, he had a wife and four children back home in England. After praying he begin to improve. I went back to my cell and rested from praying and fasting. When I got up the next morning I expected one of two things. He'd either be dead or alive. He was sitting up in his bed, watching the children playing at the foot of his bed. His wounds had healed during the night."
I smiled feeling my heart bubble over with joy and relief for the man he had told me about, "My adopted mother used to tell me when I was little that things could be healed with a little bit of prayer, and a lot of hope. She was right. God can surely work miracles!"
For the rest of the day I went to school and was happy-go-lucky. After school I got a phone call from the Humane Resource office in Center. They wanted me to go and live with a foster family till I became of age to go out on my own. I went to Michael immediately in the hallway after third period. I was in tears, "They want me to go to a foster home till I become of age to be out on my own. I can't do that! I was fine till all this happened with my parents..." He hugged me closely, "Listen to me, God never puts on us more than we can handle. Pray about it, Ana. Things will pass soon and you will be alright."
I went home and knelt in prayer for the rest of the day. As dinner neared I didn't stop praying. Finally feeling weak and unable to move, Michael came and got me. He had cooked quiet a feast for just us two. I looked at the meal and smiled, "This looks great but whatever are we to do about praying? Should I find a way to cease it for now?"
He laughed and sighed, "I don't think God would disapprove of you sitting here and eating something."
I ate the meal without fussing. When I was done I went to the bed and flipped on the television. I saw Touched by an Angel on and I watched the episode. Michael was amused that they actually put on television shows about God and angels. I laughed when I saw him gazing into the television, "What sort of machine can capture images such as this?"
I looked at him and couldn't help but giggling more, "It's called a television and the images did not capture the people. It comes from satellites in outer space." I shrugged. "It's kinda hard to explain it because I'm not a scientist."
He stared at me and then tried to grab at the television again. I turned it off finally and sighed, "I think we should go somewhere. Come on, I'll take some money out of the bank. We're going out to eat and to the mall. No use in poking around here." He got up and threw on a t-shirt and some jeans. It was a big change from him wearing his boxers around the hotel room. It was not it embarrassed me, but it was awkward. He wasn't my boyfriend, and he wasn't my lover. I looked over at him. Not that I would mind him being either one.
The next morning at school, I saw Casbell in the hallway. He came up to me and leaned against the lockers, "Ana...it's good to see you. What have you been up to?" I looked at him and scoffed, "Nothing much what have you been up to?" He sighed and moved a piece of his hair behind his left ear, "Well nothing really. I miss you so much. You have no idea!"
My heart ached at those words. I smiled softly, "I'm sorry to hear that, Casbell I really am. Maybe you will one day find someone to take that loneliness away." I just couldn't find myself telling him that I missed him too, even though deep down I did.
Suddenly Michael appeared with his Jansport book bag slung over his shoulder. He leaned over and kissed my cheek, "Hey sweetheart. I'm sorry I was so late getting back from class. What are you two doing?" I smiled as Casbell and then at Michael, "Oh nothing. Casbell was just stopping by to see how we were doing."
Casbell nodded and then he looked at me and Michael, "Yeah I did but anyway, I was just leaving. I hope you guys have a great valentine's." He waved as he walked off. I closed my eyes against the threat of tears. I think Michael knew what it was about. He looked into my eyes and brushed the tears away, "I thought he was threatening you or I wouldn't have bothered your conversation."
I shrugged. "It's no biggie I don't think. It's just he mentioned that Valentine's day is coming up and I have no valentine. Two days from now the valentine's dance will be going on and I have no one to take me. I have no friends and no lovers. I am alone...completely and utterly alone."
He looked into my eyes and took my hand, "You are not alone. You have me and God loves you, Ana. Remember when he wasn't there to hold your hand he's actually carrying you. Do you remember footsteps in the sand?"
I nodded and he continued, "When you only see one set of footsteps, it's then he is carrying you. God would never forsake you, Ana." I felt better after every talk we had. Later that evening I sat on the bed while he cooked dinner. When he was done he called me and I noticed the table. A red tablecloth was set on the table, he had a gold candlebra sitting in the middle, and the table set with brand new plates. He had wine in a cooler and got it out. He cracked it open and poured us a glass.
I looked up at him, "What's the special occasion?" He put his fingers to his lips for me to be quiet. When he was done pouring wine, he pulled out my chair and told me to sit down. I sat down and he pushed me up to the table. He came up behind me and put his hands on my shoulders. I felt a jolt go through me as if I had been shocked by electricity. I gasped and he looked down at me as if he had felt it too. I gulped and continued to look at him. He lowered his head closer to mine and I could feel his breath on my lips. "Will you be my Valentine, Ana?"
I gulped again and nodded slowly, mesmerized by his eyes. "Yes Michael, I will be your valentine." He lowered his head to mine and our lips touched. Softly at first, as an angel's wing and then it deepened. No tongue and then his tongue touched mine. I exploded as if seeing light for the first time. My insides melted at his touch. His hands went into my hair. The other one strayed to my waist. I felt as if I were deeply and truly falling in love for the first time.
I thought we would get into trouble for doing any of this. My heart was melting for him. I pushed him gently away, "We shouldn't be doing this. It's against God."
He looked down and me and whispered against my ear, "If something this beautiful goes against God, then let me commit every sin imaginable."
I gasped and he shushed me by kissing me again. His tongue dove into my mouth and his hands caressed my back underneath my shirt. When he lifted it over my head it landed beside the bed in a pool. My pants and underwear followed. He kissed me again holding me close and his own pants joined my own. He slowly looked down at me and smiled. He made love to me softly and slowly...not once making something passionate out of it, only for the love he felt for me.
Once it was over we lay beside one another looking in each other's eyes, "I have no regrets, Ana, know that. No matter what happens to us, or to me, I will never regret what happened."
I said nothing more just gazed at him believing that everything would be alright.
