Love Never Dies - Chapter 1

Do you know what it feels like to see the one you love slowly slipping away from you? It is the most heart wrenching of pains, because when she was lying there dying, you were out having the time of your life.

"Rebecca?" The night was silent except for her shallow breathing. Crimson red blood was puddled around her lifeless and ice-covered figure. Justin staggered out of the car as he made his way over to her. His vision blurred as tears began to roll down his pale frozen cheeks. He fell onto his knees and gently lifted her head onto his lap. The liquor in his system numbed him. He did not feel the pins and needles in his fingers as he removed his gloves to stroke her hair. Her light brown eyes looked at him vacantly and her lips twitched, as if she were trying smile at him.

"You're going to be okay." He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone dialing 911 quickly. It rang three times before a female voice answered.
"Hello, what is your emergency?"
He looked down at Rebecca and tried to stem the flow of blood that was coming from her wound.
"My wife has been shot or stabbed and we need help immediately." His voice shook with panic and queasiness.

"What is your location sir?" He recited his address twice and then hesitantly hung up looking down at his dying wife. The alcohol was beginning to leave his system and he noticed his fingers were starting to lose feeling so he reached over and put the gloves back on. He wondered if moving her inside would be best.

"Rebecca? If you can hear me, I'm going to try to move you, okay?"

He took the slight movement of her head as agreement. He bent down and gently began to lift her up under her legs. She cried out in pain as he lifted her off the snow-covered ground. Her body began to convulse in pain and he rushed to the door. His hands were shaking as he maneuvered the key into the slot and opened it. The warmth of the house greeted them both and he sighed in relief. He closed the door with the foot and walked into the living room setting her down on the couch softly.

"I'll be right back okay?" Rebecca looked up at him as tears began to spill down her cheeks. She tried to speak but the words wouldn't come out. "Just wait one second."

He ran upstairs and grabbed two thick blankets. Suddenly there was a knock at the door and he almost fell down the stairs as he went to answer it.

"Where is she?" He gestured to the living room and the paramedics made their way over with the gurney. They looked at each other and frowned. "Is this a joke?" Justin ran into the room and looked down at the couch. It was empty.
"No. No. That's impossible. She was just here. I swear."

The two men looked at each other and then began to walk out the door signaling to the cop behind their ambulance that it was a false alarm.

"You look like you're on something. If I were you I would get some sleep then wake up and think about what you did. There are real emergencies out there."

Justin continued to stare at the couch in shock. "She was just there..." His voice was barely a whisper.

The men looked at each other again this time with a worried look. "Maybe you should come with us sir."

Justin looked away from the couch then. "Why? I'm not hurt and my wife is missing."

The two men set the gurney and each took an arm firmly. "Please sir. We need to take you in. You're not thinking straight. You could endanger yourself."

Justin tried to shake them off but he couldn't seem to take them both. "My wife is missing and all you care about is that I had little to drink tonight?!" His screams alerted the cop outside and he began to bound up the drive way.

"What's going on in here -?" The officer paused and stared into the face of the man.
"Richard? Men let go of that man." The officer approached him and looked into his confused eyes.
Justin looked at the two men then at the officer. "Do I know you?"
The officer sighed and looked away. "Yes. You do know me Richard."
Justin frowned. "My name isn't Richard its Justin."
The officer took a deep breath and nodded. "My sincere apologies Justin. Now would you care to accompany me to the hospital?"

"Why? My wife.."
"Your wife is in the back of the ambulance and waiting for you Justin. Don't you remember? These two men put her back there."

Justin looked at the men then back at the officer. "Yes. I do remember. We should really get to the hospital sir." He grabbed his coat and began to briskly walk to the officer's car.

The two paramedics stood staring at the officer in shock. "Why did you just lie to him?"

The cop hushed them and brought them close as they began to walk to their vehicles.

"What you see here boys is a man in denial. I just saw this man not even a month ago at a different house kneeling in the front yard. He is blaming himself for the death of his pregnant wife. She was shot and killed by a mugger. He hasn't been right in the head ever since. He needs to be put back into the mental ward."

"Do you need us anymore?"

The officer shook his head no. "I'll take him back to the mental ward. He will be watched closer this time. You boys have a good night."

"Same to you sir."

The officer made his way into the car and smiled at Justin. "Are you ready to see your wife?"

Justin managed a smile. "Very much sir, I bet by now they fixed her up."

The officer offered a fake smirk and turned the car on murmuring under his breath. "Poor boy."
