Love in Denial: Chapter 9
Danni spends more time with Jamie.
Hi everyone, this is chapter 9 in Love in denial. I read some of the comments and though it was from such a long time ago. I decided to give you more of Danni which was the suggestion that most readers made. I will post about Loving graydon soon, this story is just easier to write.****
Chapter 9
Across town Danni held her breath as she knocked and waited for Jamie to answer the door. "Hey" It was Mike who answered the door and she felt disappointed "Jamie told me that you were coming to the barbecue" he leant in and hugged her, her eyes widened as she saw Jamie enter the room. He saw them embracing and looked away.
She stepped into the apartment and for once she was at a loss. She had the sudden urge to blurt out that she no longer wanted to marry Mike because she was falling in love with his brother. Thankfully she resisted and went forward to greet Jamie. "Hello Jamie"
"Hello Dan" he looked down at her and then gave her a quick once over and her pulse raced. "You look lovely"
"She's a model of course she looks lovely" Mike interrupted placing his arm around Danni's waist "isn't he old-fashioned" he laughed at his brother.
"Of course how silly of me" Jamie remarked dryly
"I like that you said it" she reassured him placing her hand on his arm, he looked down at it and then she was yanking it away. Was she being too obvious? Danni was so new to this. She hadn't really liked someone before, not in the same way that she liked Jamie. She actually had butterflies in her stomach and they were racing around causing her to feel slightly dazed.
"Shall we get going?" Jamie looked down at his watch "Its already 10 and Danni has that gala event in the evening"
Mike groaned "I hate those things, I'm glad I'm not going"
"Then who's going with Danni?" Jamie stopped his brother
"Oh she doesn't mind" he waved his brother's question aside "This sort of thing is boring anyway now if it were a real party she knows I would be right by her side"
Jamie opened his mouth to say something but she jumped in "Its fine, I prefer it this way, its more of a business event anyway"
"I thought you said it's a benefit that your sister started in your mother's name?" Jamie persisted refusing to let it go "that sounds pretty important to me"
"Then why don you go with her" Mike huffed annoyed to be still talking about something that he obviously had no interest in. Jamie shrugged and gave up "let's get going" Mike said ushering them out.
They went in Danni's car so that she could leave for the gala event when she needed to. In the backseat Jamie was quiet and she met his puzzled gaze in the review mirror before he shifted his eyes to stare out the window. Danni swallowed her desire to break it off with Mike there and then, but something held her back, perhaps it was the realization that if she broke it off with Mike, Jamie would leave.
They arrived at Jim and Sarah's place and she was surprised to see so many cars lining the street. "You have a lot of friends" Danni told Jamie as they walked up to the house.
Mike laughed "yeah who would have thought right?" Danni opened my mouth to say something but Jamie shot her a 'don't you dare get involved' look. Danni shrugged her shoulders and smiled as Jim let them in.
"Hey you came" He gave Danni a gentle hug before shaking hands with Mike and Jamie
"everybody is outside, boy will they be surprised" Danni heard Jamie groan behind her and couldn't help but shoot him a devilish look over her shoulder.
"Hey everyone" Jamie greeted as they made our way outside, there was a resounding cheer as people came to greet their friend and then an awkward silence as their eyes shifted to the figure beside him.
"What haven't you seen a supermodel before" Jamie mocked taking her hand reassuringly and leading her down the patio steps to an empty seat
"Not at any of my barbecues, no" someone piped up. It was a petite elf like girl who had made the wise crack. She extended her hand and Danni shook it. "Cathy" she introduced herself "I love your work"
"And what work would that be exactly" Jamie cut in and then coughed trying to cover up the snide comment.
"Don't worry about him" Paul came over "He's just jealous that you make millions just being you"
"No, that makes you jealous" Jamie corrected and everyone laughed.
Danni blushed, this type of attention was the embarrassing kind, because people like Jamie and his friends didn't really care that she was a supermodel. It was a just a novelty to them that would quickly wear off and then they would be judging her on her personality, a department she felt she definitely lacked in.
"So what are you doing here anyway, how do you know Jamie?" another girl asked
"She doesn't" Jamie answered quickly "Danni is engaged to our Mike"
Danni felt ashamed to be associated with Mike, he was already at the informal bar Jim had set up downing a beer. "Yes" she returned "that's right, Mike and I are getting married"
"Wow" Cathy murmured shooting the other girls a shocked look
"Right, that's what I thought" Sarah agreed
"So are you exited, I'm Fiona by the way" Danni smiled warmly in greeting
"Yes very, I can't wait. Mike is wonderful person"
Paul coughed "are we talking about the same Mike here" they all laughed at that
Danni shifted uncomfortably and met Jamie's intense stare and realized that he had been listening to the entire conversation. "I think I'll get myself a drink" She excused herself.
"Did you mean it" Jamie was beside her as she made her way to the drinks table.
"Mean what?"
"About Mike" he caught her arm and pulled her to one side "surely you must realize that you don't know him that well, the guy won't even consider coming with you to the benefit tonight, how wonderful can he be?"
"That guy is your brother" she pointed out but she was secretly thrilled by his reaction. He rocked back on the balls of his feet realizing what he had just gotten himself into.
"Yes he is and I would be the best judge on his character wouldn't you say"
"Are you implying that I deserve better than Mike?" She stepped closer and could see he was tempted to take a step back but he admirably stood his ground.
"Something like that" he replied wearily running a hand through his hair.
Jamie's pov
Damn it this was hard, it had been so much easier when he had hated her, but then again that had been before he had met her. He was beginning to realize that he didn't want her marry Mike and it wasn't because he was concerned for his brother. Mike had always been a cheap, inconsiderate little boy there was no way he could please a woman like Danni. No, Danni needed someone who would fight her, tell her when she was wrong but at the same time support and protect her. Someone like me he realized and then quickly suppressed the thought hating that his feelings had gotten the better of him.
"What are you thinking about" she leaned closer as if she could actually see into his mind if she leaned close enough. It was the most charming thing.
He laughed holding her back and at an arm's length "Stay still" he ordered when she tried to squirm free
"Do I make you nervous"
"Incredibly and for all the wrong reasons" he told her bitterly
Danni frowned when he said it like that he made it sound like an insult. He made her feel like her beauty was inadequate but all she had was her looks. "I'm sorry" she murmured
"Stop that" he warned, "apologizing I mean"
"I only seem to do it around you" she huffed "I don't usually apologize, but I just feel like I have to keep explaining myself, that I have to somehow prove to you that I'm not some stereotype of model"
"Can we not have this conversation right now" He looked over her shoulder noticing the curious looks they were getting
"Yes we would hate for your friends to actually think you might like me" she spat back
"Exactly" he snapped watching as her eyes widened and then she controlled whatever feelings she had and cleared her face. He kept quiet not sure what to say to that artful display at self-control.
"I'm going to prove to you that I can do it" She told Jamie
"And what would you be proving?"
"I am going to marry Mike, and so help me, I'll die his wife, and then you'd have to eat your words" she smiled triumphantly even though it would be the biggest display of cutting your nose to spite your face in world history.
He paled "and you would do it wouldn't you, just to punish me you would go through with it"
"Punish you, why would I be punishing you"
"I meant me and my family" he interjected her hopeful rambling. "My parents would be devastated"
"Even if the marriage survived?" Danni bit her lip "I know I have my flaws...I'm not perfect, I'm only human" she stammered trying again to defend herself to him. "I...can't win with you"
"Danni" Jamie stepped forward "I am sorry"
"I'm sorry too but you certainly made your point" She turned to leave him, needing that drink now more than ever.
She heard him curse and then he was beside her again escorting her to the drinks table. "
"I said I get it" she hissed "you don't have to follow me around, don't worry I'll behave and then I'll leave and you won't have to see me anymore" He nodded grimly and left her alone.
Danni sighed this was exhausting actually liking someone and it hurt like crazy when they didn't reciprocate those feelings. She stayed for a couple of hours and then said her goodbyes. It was Jamie who walked her out, Mike was in the middle of an intense conversation or so he had told them.
Jamie was furious as they walked to her car, it was not so much what he said but rather the murderous expression on his face. "Can you believe him!" he finally expelled.
"Look I know what you trying to do, and while the angle of putting your brother down in the hopes that I might not marry him is inventive it's not going to work"
He caught her arm "Wait you think I'm trying to trick you into not marrying my brother" he was shocked "That's not my style...now maybe that's what you used to but I would never try and deceive you. I have made it perfectly clear that I don't want you to marry my brother and I have told you why"
"Yes you have" she murmured once again shocked by the sheer brilliance of his character. She wondered what it might be like to be with someone who was that honest all the time.
He let go of her arm and they walked in silence to her car "you should try and enjoy yourself tonight"
She grinned "I always do"
He raised a quizzical brow "Really?"
"No" she admitted "not really"
"Goodbye Danni" and he leant towards her and brushed his lips lightly against hers and then he was turning around leaving her red in face and staring after him.
