Loss of Man's Best Friend
This is a tale of how you give your heart to your pet and how difficult it becomes when you face death of his. I have listed lifetime and moments spent with my pet Dog Lucy from her coming to our place till her sad demise.
Loss of Man's Best Friend
Dedicated to Dear Lucy(24 Aug 1995 -17 Aug 2009)
There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear
Rudyard Kipling wrote this poem more than a century ago but still this poem implies to our day-to-day lives when we deal and live together with mans best friends i.e Dog.
Whenever we Buy a puppy we see small furry toy which we happily take home but unknowingly we give our heart and feelings to that same toy, this is not felt when your Dog is young and healthy but when he reaches his old age then only we realize the ultimate truth we have to face:
DEATH.
Below is the story of life and sad demise of my Pet which was moreover considered as my sister and as Child by my parents :
It was on 5 September 1995 I was around 11 yrs old and one a nice evening during ganpati (Indian God ) festival when I was playing with my friends when I got call from my dad and his friends to come home quickly.
When I reached home I saw two Puppies one was white German Spitz other one was black Doberman, my Uncle asked me to take one of these as Gifts. My Granny told me to take white one as she thought black dog as omen (typical Indian granny's) So this is how I got Best gift ever in my life. We named her Lucy (Light : Russian) though till date me and my sister fight as who named her.
Lucy was Cute, sweet and naughty like anything. She used to pee all over home and do all weird things like tearing clothes due to all this she would have got expelled from House by my mother But fortunately she impressed my Mom by wagging her tail whenever Mom was back from Office and buttering her by licking her feet in truly doggy ways.
Lucy was growing healthier naughtier whenever she found front gate of our house open she used to run on ground in front of our house and then I had to sprint to catch her.
During one of such incidents when she ran from House and we had to go for a Party, I went out to catch her finally achiever my goal but ended in making mess of all my New Clothes which left Me and Lucy at home all alone.(I was 222 much angry on Lucy which she felt I guess)
My cousin used to come to our place and we used play with Lucy as ringmaster do in Circus, by giving offering her some cauliflower we used to make her jump from one sofa other sometimes over quite a long distance. (thank god she always reached other end of Sofa safely).
My sister and her friends used to play 'House House' and would always make Lucy a small baby which they used wrap tightly in some Shawl and always petting her as if she was small child She also always enjoyed this probably coz she used to get Milk at the end of this play.
Once my father took Lucy for daily morning walk when they came across a 1-year-old German shepherd (Michael) seeing that Dog Lucy gave him so fierce "Don't mess with me" look that poor Michael which was thrice of Lucy's size was afraid of her all his life.
Days passed in flash we moved to our new flat first thing which Lucy did when we shifted and reached new place was she did complete reconnaissance of our new home as if someone has planted mines after this she gave all approved look to us and went under the Sofa which was one of her favorite places in her lifetime.
After this so-called my career days started Now I was busy in my 10th,12th later engineering also my sister was doing her graduation all these years days passed Lucy grew fit and fine enjoying life Queen Size her favorite dishes being Shrikhand Chicken Curry prepared by our Mom. And fruit which she would die for was papaya So daily my Dad used to bring one when he was back from office.
On of such Sundays we had prepared Shrikhand and the pot full of it was kept on dining table but suddenly it fell down where Lucy was waiting as if she knew this was going to happen So she ended up completely coated with Shrikhand My sister took her for bath but up to last extant Lucy was licking all of Shrikhand which was all over her face.
On days when chicken was prepared at our place one had to be careful as Lucy would scratch your legs if you don't give her the share.
One thing which she always did was whenever my Mom used to have food if Lucy was hungry or no she was there always to have food with her as if she was also like Indian women who eats once family has finished their meal.
Before 3 years Lucy was diagnosed with Tumor which we had to operate after which she recovered very fast My sister used to pat her all night and took care of her in best possible way which made recovery easier.
When I was in my final year of engineering my Sister got married (when my Brother in law first came our Home Lucy went to him happily as if she welcomed new family member with Joy) As there was no one to take care of Lucy at home and we didn't want to keep her alone all day my Mom took voluntary retirement.
This probably made bond between my Mom and Lucy even stronger as they used to spend almost a whole day with each other.
I completed Engineering got Job and had to depart from Lucy after So many years, I kept visiting home regularly and she always welcomed me with smile on her face(one who owns dog can only know how they smile)
She always wanted to sit on front seat of Car and used to give Poor You look to all strays around.
This year I took a week leave went home and spent best days of my life with her, we daily had her favorite dishes like Chicken, fish, papaya kheer (Indian custard)
That week ended quite fast and I had to go back to my workplace , So while leaving I kissed her as usual patted her and left from home unknowingly that this would be the last time I will be seeing her.
Next week when I was at my sisters place(as she stays in same City where I work) my Mom called me saying that Lucy is sick she didn't tell me what happened just informed that she is not eating food they took her to Vet and he said you shouldn't worry that day was Friday. She was fine on Saturday but on Sunday morning she suddenly fell ill my parents again took her to Vet she was given some injections, whole day my parents were tensed but didn't inform me and my sister as we would get nervous. On Monday I was also sick took leave and was resting at sisters place when Mom called and told us that lucy's health has been going down and she was taken to Vet who suggested Sonography when result's came hell was unleashed over us report mentioned her tumor being spread all over her liver and spleen.
She was barking in pain and when I heard that sound over phone I cried tears of blood. We asked vet for operation which he said it was not possible seeing her blood reports he told my parents that Lucy may live for 2 hrs or 2 months. All these days she was carrying this stuff in her body and not showing single sign of illness or pain maybe there is reason for every tragedy to happen. We called Vet in Some other city and asked if we take Lucy by flight to his place would he be able to operate or if he knew any Vet outside India who can fly to do this operation But we were suggested to wait for few days. She was given saline whole day evening she was brought home around 8 o'clock she ate her favorite Ice-cream while sleeping in my father's lap. Parents thought she would be all right and they saw a ray of hope. Around 11 my mom finished some work and went to sit with Lucy, she looked and slept in Moms Lap as if she was waiting desperately for her.
Within few minutes She looked my Mom in eyes and with her head in Moms lap took her last breath, My mom was all broke as her daughter who was 14 yrs old was sleeping cold in her lap not to get up again and bark. That day was 7 days before her 15th birthday may be she was not destined to complete 15 Yrs. Mom kept her vain didn't informed my father same night and she sat all night besides Lucy as if miracle would make her alive again.
In Morning when Dad got up he saw all this and he also broke after this on that day my Parents kept saying to me that Lucy is alive and she is sleeping I believed them as I hoped all my prayers and faith would make her live. But I was a blind believer there is no god which can save someone from Death, Death is the ultimate truth.
My parents ,driver and Dad's colleague all performed Lucy's last right at a field around 15 KMS away from my home. For next two days I kept asking Mom where is Lucy I got same answer that she is sleeping but I was moron not to understand that she is sleeping never to wake up again. I asked mom let me here her breath over Phone my Mom hesitated I thought once as if my mom is lying realizing this I took Bus same evening for home.
In morning when I reached at my place Mom opened the door Lucy didn't come to welcome me I thought she would be sleeping as she was sick so I went all round our place in her search of her My Mom came from behind and told me that Lucy is no more, sky broke over my head I didn't knew what to react I guess this made beast out of me come out and I broke all Photos of God which I had faith in which didn't save my Lucy (Sorry if this offends anyone). I became atheist in an instance and have never believed in God again.
I didn't eat for next few days didn't joined Job back was just sitting at Home used to see television all night and seeing place where Lucy used to sit. All these nights I hoped Lucy would come in any form to visit me but she didn't might be she was Busy in her afterlife.
Till day I hope I meet her again now or in my afterlife and as some author has said
"I don't want to go to heaven if there is no space in heaven for Dogs"
Lucy whenever I hear that name or touch any Dog shiver runs down my spine and I get shattered.
I joined job back after a month ,One of nights after this disaster I drank too much and was sitting over pavement with friend when stray dog came sat nearby me and was licking my hands
I felt as if Lucy is back that Dog played with me for almost 2 hrs and left. I hope this was Lucy's visit which she would do again.
In the end I would like to say once my grandpa told me not to keep Pup (Lucy) as We won't able to sustain her loss, I wish I would have obeyed him.
This is story of a Dog called Lucy who visited our home and brightened our lives leaving a void which can't be filled ever, but with Memories to cherish forever.
I would just say:
Best place to bury once Dog is his masters heart and Lucy is there now and will always be.
