While walking we use our muscles which results in burning calories. Besides working the muscles, walking boosts up one's metabolism that prevents calories from turning into fats in your body. Walking at a moderate pace for up to two miles can boost up one's metabolism for up to 12 hours. Other than dealing with calories, walking reduces appetite. Like other anaerobic exercises, walking suppresses one's appetite slightly. However, contrary to this statement, many people feel hungry after walking. One may have this feeling because his body is thirsty. Drink some water. If one still feels hungry, it may indicate that one is working too hard. Slow down a bit. Nevertheless, walking for physical fitness is a great option.
Lose Weight by Walking
Walking to lose weight can bring results if only one is dedicated towards it. Set a daily routine aside for it. Beginners should start with a fixed time during the day for their walking exercise. Most health experts suggest the morning, after one wakes up, as the best time for walking as the body is able to burn more calories during this time of the day. Set a one week goal. Walking every day for 30 - 40 minutes for about 5 days in a week can help you to lose weight effectively. Start with short distances then move on to cover longer distances. Even ambling is better than sitting idle. However, the faster you walk, quicker will be the results. For even better results, walk on an incline. Walking on even surfaces is good for long term weight loss. However, to lose weight faster, consider walking on an incline. Also take deep breaths while walking. The more oxygen you breathe, the larger amount of calories you burn. An effective way of breathing is to inhale for 5 seconds. Then, hold your breath for another 5 seconds, and then exhale for 5 seconds. Continue this breathing pattern while you walk.
So much so about walking. However, it is important to remember is that no matter how mild, walking is a form of exercise. Hence, it is important to warm up before starting to walk. Start with an easy pace for the first 5 minutes for a warm up. This is specially important for those who walk long distances at high speed, or those who are planning to walk uphill. For those who don't have the option or don't want to take a walk in the open, a trip to the gym can be a useful option. Treadmills are useful exercise equipments that can help one to lose weight. For those who are dedicated about losing weight by walking, there are two forms of walking that they can adopt. One is power walking. This refers to walking at a speed that touches the higher end of the speed range of normal gait, which is approximately 4.5 to 5.5 mph. Power walking is almost as efficient as jogging. The other form is interval walking, in which one needs to speed up for as long as he can, then stop to catch breath, and again start walking at maximum speed that one can achieve.
