If you attend meetings, it’s a good idea to speak up as much as possible during the discussion segment, so that people can begin putting a face and name. Of course, you don’t want to be known as the person who "always has something to say," because this could be viewed as negatively if you come across as condescending, so choose your words carefully and carry yourself humbly.

Get Yourself Quoted

This is something many execs-to-be don’t think about, but should take advantage of at every turn. There’s nothing that makes you look more knowledgeable in your field than being quoted as an expert. So if you have a friend - or know of a friend of a friend - who works for a magazine, newspaper, or prominent website and can write relevant articles in your field, it’s a good idea to get yourself quoted.

But before approaching a writer under this agenda, it would help tremendously to come up with some fresh ideas. This way, you cannot only increase your chances of getting quoted, but also help the writer by offering her some relevant article topics.

Volunteer to Give Speeches

If you’ve already taken major strides in your field - and already have one or more impressive "former" titles to showcase - then you could take advantage of this by volunteering to provide your already-acquired expertise in your community, at your college, or at other functions. Non-profit organizations are always looking for free or inexpensive speakers to provide knowledge to the masses. Why not start there to help get your name out and increase your candidacy potential as you search for an executive position?
