Longboards for Beginners
Longboarding is basically skateboarding, though with a long skateboard. Choosing one could be quite a task, because its kind will determine how well it fares. Therefore, this article will deal with longboards, especially for beginners.

Longboards For Amateurs
Choosing a Longboard: Whenever you go to buy one, just ensure that you do not buy the models which have been publicized or advertised as for 'beginners' or one that is disposable. Then, as said earlier, do not get confused between a longboard and a regular skateboard. It ranges from around 32 inches in length up to 5 feet. Thus, go for a one that is specifically labeled.
Length: The axle or wheel assemblies (truck) must be at a minimum distance that is equal to the distance between rider's feet when they are shoulder width apart. It is best suited for a beginner when a foot is placed inside each truck, which yields more control while skating. For a starter, a mid-length board is just about perfect which measure between 39 and 50 inches. This is because longer boards do not have the capacity to turn tightly, whereas shorter boards suit the smaller riders well.
Wheels and Wheelbase: Large wheels and wheel base is what characterizes longboards and they spin slower for maintaining the speed in comparison with smaller wheels. They should always be chosen after checking the wheels of the board. In fact, the best ones necessarily includes larger wheels, though they could vary in hardness. If you go for a complete longboarding skateboard, it will most probably have medium-sized wheels with medium hardness.
Shape: The size of the longboard is very crucial. What the beginners should avoid is the convex-shaped board. In such a type of design, the highest point is in the middle and the convex shape stretches from the nose to tail. A side to side concave or nose to tail concave would be a better choice.
Deck Flex: The flex of the deck is very important. These decks are made of shaped wood or composite material which balances different properties like weight, stiffness, waist and so on. A flex of the longboard is very crucial because it is responsible for pushing the wheels into the ground, making the board jut out at turns. The test of the flex is when you stand on the board with feet just within the trucks, the board should not flex even slightly. But, the board should be such that if the rider pushes his or her body weight down onto it, he or she should be able to derive the flex.
Cost: Well, now we come to the big bucks. First off all, if you want to save on money, buying online is not a very good option. Therefore, go to a shop where there would be experienced staff which would guide you properly. They would do so considering your height and weight. But hey, watch out for cheap ones. On an average, you would not get a good quality longboard for less than $100.
Finally, appropriate safety gear is extremely essential. Hence, please do not forget your helmet, rather invest in a good one. In addition to that, use other gears like elbow pads, knee pads and such.
