You must first simplify the main ingredients that are given to you whether it is the company name or color and match them to the company’s goals and expectations. However the symbol must relate well to the company name in order for it to be successful. There is no point in teaming a symbol of a fruit with an insurance company. Take Apple Mac for example, they use a symbol of an apple to go with their name. And as they are now one of the world’s most recognizable brands, you would have to agree that this works. Other example of this can be seen by looking at Shell and Domino’s Pizza who both use symbols derived from their name as their logo designs. However, simple symbols cannot be used in every case. For example Marks and Spencer’s use a simple but sleek logo that consists of M&S. By using the initials of the name, there is almost a symbol logo being created, that has become their identity. This method of logo design can be applied to almost every company name. This is not only very up to date and fashionable, but it is also relevant to the company’s ethos.
If you choose to use the full name of the company in the logo, make sure that the font that is used emphasizes the company’s style. If the company are traditional, use a font that reflects this such as a clean serif font. If the company wants a more contemporary style, use a sans serif font that will reflect this. By doing this it will almost ensure that the font does not date too soon unlike if you were to use a themed font that could come across as cheap and tacky.
