Living Smart: Picking the Right Credit Card

Living Smart: Picking the Right Credit Card
Even though we are in one of the worst credit crisis in recent memory, there is still a need for both consumers and businesses to use credit. With out the use of credit buying power would reduce significantly and push our economy into and even deeper recession. The problem we are in now is not caused from the use of credit in general, but rather the loose credit standards that many banks and credit companies began to use. When used properly credit is a great way to leverage yourself to purchase a variety of things. However as we have seen when credit is abused it can cause ripples throughout the economy.

One of the most used forms of credit is the credit or charge card. This is a simple plastic card that allows a consumer to purchase a product or service with out having to use his or hers cash right away.

The tradeoff is the company lending the credit charges an interest rate on the balance of the card. In some instances the credit company will allow you to carry a balance forward, and you only have to pay the minimum amount due. Other companies make you pay off the balance every month. In either circumstance this allows the user to manage their cash a little easier.

One of the more difficult things for a potential credit card customer is picking the right card for them. There are many aspects of a credit card, and with all the products out there it can be a daunting task to understand exactly what you are getting into. In this article I will try to break down a few items to look for when applying for a credit card.

The most important thing in a credit card is the interest rate. What is it going to cost you to hold money on the card? Look for cards that carry low interest rates and have a fixed interest rate that will not change on you over time.

Also, since you will be using the card look for companies that will reward you for your purchases. Rewards can be a great way to get something back. Look for credit cards that will give you rewards you can use, such as sky miles or gift cards.

You will want to look into what type of card will fit you best. Are you looking to hold a balance for a few months, or will you be able to pay off the balance every month? If you are able to pay off the balance every month it may serve you better to look into a charge card. American Express is a well known charge card company, and has some of the better rewards.

Looking into what credit card is best for you may take some time. Ask around and read some customer reviews as to how people have liked different cards or companies.
