Living in an RV down by the river
My story describing life made easier in an RV by the river. Read what I think are the benefits for living life with mobile satellites.
A Wish for Satellite Internet
How does the old saying go? Home is where you park your house. No wait – home is the road with the least amount of traffic. Or is home is a tank full of gas? That doesn’t sound right either. I’ve got it! Home is where you get your Internet. And if that’s the case, satellite Internet connections mean that your home can go you anywhere you can.
Anyone who has done some serious time in an RV might recognize a home in any of those descriptions. Satellite Internet providers can now make sure that wherever you go, the Internet can stay with you. I did my time in an RV a few years ago. Spent more than six months living in a 5th wheel trailer (down by the river) while I wrote a novel. It was a very… singular experience.
Yet it was hard to call my trailer a home. I was poor, hungry, and living out in what could only generously be call the "backcountry". I was never on the road, and never had a full tank of gas. Satellite Internet would have been my only hope to remain connected… but it never happened.
A Starving Artist
At the time, I had few responsibilities and a reasonable savings account. If I was going to do the "writing thing" it was then or never. So I finished school and quit my job. I learned very quickly how to budget. An acquaintance rented me the trailer at good a price, but to make sure that I could go the distance I had to cut back on a few things… like food.
Pizza is wonderful. For around five dollars I could stretch one into three whole meals, which is great, since I was eating about one meal a day. Sure, it sounds unhealthy, but I also learned that I could make myself believe that nursing a 44oz. soda all day could replace regular nourishment. Ordering a pizza over a satellite Internet connection… this is the stuff of dreams.
Under Attack
I wasn’t alone in my RV. If I had satellite Internet I could have at least made some virtual friends, unfortunately I had to settle for the creatures who regularly assaulted my home. I learned quickly that if I left out anything resembling food (and this includes a small lump of clay) the voles would get it. I never actually saw a vole, but they stole or destroyed my stuff on a regular basis.
Don’t forget the swarm. There was a dairy not far from my location, and I soon filled three fly paper strips within a few days’ time. Satellite Internet may not have made them go away, but it would have made me feel a lot better.
I heard once that the great artists have to suffer for their craft. I’m not sure if a fly infested trailer shared by thieving voles counts, but I thing it ought to. Not having satellite Internet probably doesn’t count. But in a few years I bet it will.
Writing Mobility
I finished my book and got a real job. I still have the dream though. It’s one a lot of writers share. Imagine a place of complete seclusion and serine beauty – what could be better to spark your creativity and foster a writing atmosphere? With a satellite Internet set up you can do it. Take your RV anywhere and still keep in touch with agents and editors, or access worlds of research materials. You could have a cabin next to a lake, somewhere even cellular signals don’t go (like the one in the movie Secret Window, only without all the murder and dismemberment) and a satellite Internet connection means you don’t have to suffer any more than is strictly required by your art.
