Living In A Cage

The true pain of compassion.
Your smile reveals a sadness
Trying to hide your tears,
You see his face in the window
But it's not real.
It's just another memory
To torment your broken heart,
Trying to hold the pieces
Of a love that's crumbling fast.

You burn your breath with alcohol
And toxic cigarettes,
You sit there in a smokey haze
Trying to reflect,
As you write down your memoirs
Page after page,
You feel locked in the illusion
Of living in a cage.

Your lifeless eyes keep staring
Out of the foggy mists,
The shadows of your twilight
That go dancing with your ghosts.
You feel entrapped in yesterday
With a longing to return,
For tomorrow brings the misery
Of another day alone.

There's no way out, no escape,
This living in a cage,
You feel the true compassion
And it's agonizing rage,
As it steals away your heartbeat
And burns away your soul
To leave an apathy for happiness,
Emotionally cold.

Your picture portrait's fading
To leave life's little scars,
The beauty that once lived there
Is now caged in the past,
Locked up in a memory
Of what could never be.
He was never meant for you
And you were never meant for me.

So you see, I share your apathy
I know just how you feel,
I too am caged in memories
Of a love that wasn't real.
So we're both sharing the misery
Of life without a soul.
Even though we're not together,
We'll never be alone.
