Living Alone Together - Chapter Fifteen

Two separate lives are lived side by side.
Chapter Fifteen.

"I'm fine, Ace. Come on... don't walk off."
"Take me home, please William?"
"Ace, why is he so obsessed?"

She shook her head.
"I don't know."
"He said you wanted him to move back here."
"That was a long time ago."
"Oh yeah? Then why has he been attacking me?"
She shook her head, "maybe he's threatened?"

Silence filled the car as William drove.

"Stay with me."
"I can't, William."
"Why won't you look me in the face?"
She opened her door as soon as he cut the engine.
"Ace..."

Aislinn wished tonight's blissful moment would've lasted long enough.

There she had it, the end to what had hoped to be a perfect night. The man of her dreams, literally!
Attacked by her former love for the second time!

Now she was being attacked by her guilt.

She couldn't look him in the eye. But she had to. She'd make it quick.

He was a step behind her all the way up to the last step before the front door.

Turning around she put a hand on his chest to stop him from following and he winced. His reaction made her hands tremble and the ice queen mask she was trying so hard to put together, melted.

He saw her tremble and reached to pin her hand between his and his chest.

"I'll be fine. Look at me, Ace. I will be."

She ducked her head.

"It's 3am, William. Go home."
"Let me stay with you."
"But..."
"Please, Ace..." he softly coaxed.

She took her free hand, patted their entwined hands, kissed his cheek and slowly tugged him into the house.

The floor creaked as they walked hand in hand through the dark house and to her bedroom.

Everyone was asleep, she thanked goodness, for she didn't want to answer prodding questions.

She went straight for the bathroom and changed into her usual shorts and tank top. Before leaving the washroom, she took a face cloth and dampened it with warm water.

Padding over to her bed, she waved William over. He had taken a seat at the chair by the door since they stepped in her room.

"Trying to soak it all in?" She joked whispered.
He gave a tiny smile.
His face hurt.
His whole body hurt, for that matter.

She waved him over again, "Come here."
"What's in your hand?"
"Oh, just come here."

My, did she look adorable in her sleep-wear. His thoughts began to fuzz over. He drunkenly walked over to her bed, once or twice stumbling and landing on her bed with a wince.

"Oow..." He groaned.
"Sshh... Now just lay down on this side. OK."

Aislinn gently wiped away at his face. She couldn't resist kissing the tip of his nose.

Unbuttoning his shirt, she winced with him when the movements were too difficult for him. She gently wiped at his upper body and found out where he hurt by the hiss he expelled each time she got near a spot.

Putting the dry towel away, she tried to make him as comfortable as possible with pillows.

"You, ok now?" She asked before turning out the light.
"No..." He groaned adjusting himself on his side to face her. His hand limply reached out for her but fell quickly; no energy.

"My poor hero."
His eyebrows creased.
"Sleep."
"I will," she turned out the light with her response.
Sinking into the blankets, she slept on her side. After a bit, she felt him shift more towards her side.

How would she be able to sleep now?

She could feel his breath tickle her neck as his chest met squarely with her back.

Too hell with it, she thought as she grabbed the arm that rested on his hip and placed his hand over her tummy. While waiting for sleep to catch up, she gently stroked the back of William's hand wishing all bad things would go away.
