A Brief Introduction
It is important that we know (in brief) about the various causes of liver failure or the various diseases that affects the liver before we go into the details of the diet. Some of the main causes are usually infection due to some virus or the consumption of too much alcohol. Some of the main liver diseases that people usually suffer from are hepatitis, cirrhosis, Wilson's disease, liver cancer, haemochromatosis, Budd-Chiari syndrome, glycogen storage disease type II and so on are some of the main diseases affecting the liver. You can also go through the signs in order to know what are the various signs and symptoms that indicates that a person is suffering from liver disease. Now that we know what are some of the important diseases that leads to liver failure, let us now move on to the diet for the patients.
Proper Nutrition
After the liver fails, the first thing that the doctor asks the patient to do is follow a proper diet. The liver disease leads to the failure of the liver to provide the required nutrition to the body due to which the person starts losing weight drastically. A proper diet needs to be followed in order to protect or prevent the liver from working hard and also to help it carry out its functions properly. When the food is broken down by the liver, it provides three main nutrients which helps in repairing the tissues and muscles of the body and also provides energy for carrying out the day-to-day activities and those 3 nutrients are proteins, fats and carbohydrates. A proper diet should include all these three so that your body can function well and you do not suffer from any health problems. Here are the main sources of the above three nutrients.
Proteins
Protein is required in order to carry out proper growth and repair. It also prevents the fats from building up and destroying the cells of the liver. This is usually present in foods like fish, meat, nuts, pulses, eggs and various dairy products such as cheese, yogurt, tofu and so on.
Carbohydrate
Our body requires carbohydrates in order to provide energy. The liver breaks down the carbohydrates and stores them in the form of glucose and provides them when our body needs it. Food containing sugar and starch are best for providing carbohydrates to the body. You can get this from rice, or bread or potatoes and cereals. Fruits and sugar are also good for producing carbohydrates.
Fats
Just like our body needs carbohydrates in order to produce energy, fats are also required to do the same. We can get fats from foods like butter, cheese, oil, biscuits, and other sweet meats (of course, you have to take these in small quantity as excess fat is bad for the liver). Consult your doctor in order to know the amount of fat that you should include in the diet.
There are also certain diet restrictions that you should follow and they are:
- Avoid the use of sodium in the food. A sodium free diet is important, as sodium retains the fluid in the body which leads to swelling of the body. Sodium is mainly present in packaged food, soup, canned vegetables, bacon, sausages and also table salt.
- Alcohol is a big no no, because this is one of the major cause why the liver stopped working properly in the first place.
- The amount of liquid that you take in everyday also needs to be measured as it can lead to swelling up of the body. Consult the doctor in order to know how much liquid you should take in.
