Chapter 9
Julie's POV
We went to the state park to walk one of the trails. We walked hand in hand, stopping after a few minutes to sit on a swing overlooking a pretty pond. I laid my head on his shoulder. "I have to leave in two hours." Karl said, glancing at his watch. I sighed. "I'm sorry babe. But I'll be back as soon as I can."
"I know. I understand, but I'm going to miss you so so much Karl." I said, sliding my hand up to my face to wipe away the moisture in my eyes hopefully before he could see.
He chuckled. "I saw that you know." He kissed my head. "Don't cry. Please." He stood up, pulling me up as well, wrapping my arms around my waist. I slid my arms around his chest and hugged him. He tilted his head down and kissed the top of my head. I lifted my head up, and stood on my toes, pushing my lips on his. He picked me up and set me down on a large rock, so we were closer in size. His lips roamed over my neck, back to my lips, grazing along my jaw line.
We heard giggling and broke apart to see a young girl skipping by, her mom a few feet behind her. "You were kissing." The girl said, using a disgusted tone and wrinkling her nose up.
"Yeah. We were." Karl replied, in the same tone of voice, making the same face.
The girl giggled again. "You're weird."
"Alesha, don't be rude. Sorry." Her mom said, taking her daughters hand and leading her away.
"So... where were we?" Karl smiled, moving his lips back to mine, just as his phone rang. I pulled back. He looked sad as he flipped his phone open. He glanced at the number and rolled his eyes. He rejected the call and cupped my chin in his hand, lifting my head up slightly, and kissed me again.
My heart skipped a beat at the tenderness of this kiss. It was gentle, sweet and completely amazing... but short. He backed away, looking upset. "Julie I have to go. I have to make my plane and it's an hour drive to the airport from here and we only have an hour and a half right left now."
I nodded. "Okay. Let's go." I slid off the rock, suddenly feeling bummed.
Two hours later I was sitting on my bed at home, crying, missing Karl. I was playing with a fire on my hands, tossing it back and forth, my ear buds blasting a song in my ears when my dad walked into my room. He saw the fire on my hands and I extinguished it in seconds, the flame just disappearing.
"You... you... you're like your mom..." He gasped. "Julie why didn't you tell me?"
"Because mom told me that she told you that I didn't have any powers. She said that you wouldn't be happy if you found out."
"Of course I'm not happy. Do you know how dangerous it is for someone who can control two of the elements?" He asked sitting on the bed beside me. "Julie you're the only person... or elf... left that can control fire and water. The others have all been mysteriously eliminated. When your mom died... she didn't die in a car accident. Or, well not a normal car accident like I told you she did. She was murdered, but put in the middle of a car accident to make her death seem normal. Someone or something has been killing off all the elves that they can. There are only a few left. I'm not sure how many. But I've been in contact with two of them ever since your mom died."
"Really? Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't want to get you involved in all of this. If you had told me that you did have powers I could have told you."
"I'm sorry dad. So... is there anyway I can help the remaining elves?"
"Yeah. There is. Pack your bags. We're going to Alegria."
"We're going where?" I asked, completely confused.
"Alegria. It's where the remaining elves are hiding, waiting for some sort of miracle. Which you can provide." He answered.
"Okay. Let's do this."
