Chapter 12
Keme's POV
Julie was training great. She was really eager to learn and very talented. I had her practice for an hour out by the lake. It was the only place that should be safe enough for her to practice her fire throwing. I sat back against a rock, watching her practice. She was amazing at this. Her dad showed up for a visit and after a few hours, they went for a walk. I watched them out the window until they were too far away to see.
"She has a boyfriend Keme." Kimi sneaked up behind me.
I turned. "What are you talking about Kimi? I already knew that. I sent him her letter. Remember?"
"I'm just checking. You certainly have been training with her A LOT lately and I just wanted to remind you. Besides you're 3 years older than her. That would be weird."
"Gosh Kimi what are you thinking? You think I like Julie?" When she nodded, I rolled my eyes. "Wow." I laughed. "Don't be silly." I ruffled her hair and went to my room.
Julie's POV
"Karl came to talk to me but I didn't say much. He's really missing you." Dad told me.
I sighed. "I miss him too. And once this is all over I'll be able to see him again." We had walked to the cave.
"I guess I'll get going."
"Okay dad. I'll see you later." We hugged and he left. I turned and headed back to the house. I walked in and saw Adana and Amiri sitting on the couch, talking quietly. When I walked in they both stopped talking and sat there quietly. I went to my room and shut the door, flopping onto the bed, feeling drained. Someone knocked on my door.
"Come on in." I said, not moving from my position on the bed, on my back, staring up at the ceiling.
"Hey Julie." It was Keme.
"Hey Keme, what's up?"
"Nothing. Just checking on you. You okay?"
"Yeah, fine. I just miss Karl a lot."
He was silent for a few minutes before saying, "Sorry." Then he left. I fell asleep without thinking about our conversation at all.
In my dream I was with Karl on the beach, the waves crashing up, seagulls squawking, our bodies twined together, his warm smell filling my head. I woke up feeling depressed so I went out to the lake to practice some more.
I was concentrating so hard on shooting fire balls that I didn't hear anyone behind me until Keme said, "Keep your hands cupped a little." He was standing behind me and he brought his hands around me to put my hands in the right position. "Like this." He folded his hands over mine, showing me how to cup my hands.
"Oh. Okay." I said, sort of confused by his closeness.
He turned me around to face him. "Why are you up so early?" He asked.
"I couldn't sleep. What about you? You're up early too." I replied, feeling nervous and confused.
"Same. And I heard you leave the house so I followed you to make sure you were okay." His voice was quiet now. One of his hands reached up and tucked a stray strand of hair behind my ear. Before I knew what was happening, his hand cupped under my chin and he tilted my head up.
I pulled back immediately. "Keme what are you doing? You know I have a boyfriend! Besides, your three years older than me." I turned and ran back to the house and into my room.
I woke up the next morning with a weird feeling in my stomach. I got out of bed and went to the living room. Adana and Amiri were sitting on the couch talking when I walked in. I sat between them and sighed loudly. "Why can't Sam and Thane just die of a sudden heart attack?"
Adana laughed. "What's wrong?"
"I just want to hurry up and get this over with. I miss Karl so much." I twirled a strand of my hair absently.
"Well I'm glad you feel that way." Kimi grinned as she walked into the room. "Because I think today's the day. Let's do this. You're as trained as you can possibly be."
I nodded my head. "Okay so let's go."
Amiri stood up. "Let's do this."
Keme walked in, not looking at me. "Today?"
We all nodded emphatically and he shrugged. "Whatever. Let's go."
Ten minutes later we were at a dark cold looking beach. "You ready?" I asked, turning towards Amiri. She nodded and Adana grinned.
"Let's get started. Keme, Kimi, talk to Julie's dad. Let him know we're doing it today, and stay with him until we get back. If we don't come back, don't come looking for us." Keme and Kimi both looked away at the last sentence, neither of them wanting to think of what it would mean if me, Adana and Amiri didn't come back home after this.
I took a deep breath and slowly let it out. "Okay. C'mon. What's the rest of the plan."
"Sam and Thane live on that volcanic island out there. We don't really know what they are, or how they are as strong as they are, but you three are gonna do your best to get rid of them, so..." Kimi trailed off. She walked over and hugged me. "You'll be fine. You're really strong and talented. Good luck."
I smiled back at her, weakly. "Thanks Kimi. Can you, um, give this to Karl, if I don't come back?" I asked, handing her a folded piece of paper.
She nodded. "Of course Julie."
"Okay. Bye guys." Keme took Kimi's arm and led her away.
