Super Bowl History
The National Football League is the league under which the two conferences, AFC and NFC play the championship game every year. A look at the history of Super Bowl will tell you that for the first three years the championship game was played between the National Football League (NFL) and the American Football League (AFL). In 1970, the agreement signed between the leagues regarding a merger was finalized and the two existing leagues were reassigned as conferences under the NFL. Lamar Hunt, the founder of American Football Conference (AFC), proposed the name 'Super Bowl' after seeing his daughter play with a toy called 'Super Ball', and also due to the fact that college football games were played in bowl-shaped stadiums. He thought of changing it later, but the name became so popular among its fans, that the thought was discarded. Traditionally the Super Bowl games are not denoted by the year in which they are played but by Roman numerals. Therefore, if you look up a list of Super Bowl winners in order, you will see that the list denotes games as Super Bowl I or Super Bowl XLVI instead of Super Bowl 1967 or Super Bowl 2012.
