Foods for Diabetics to Eat
If a person is diabetic it doesn't mean he can't have anything to eat, in fact, he just needs to follow a strict diabetic diet plan, in which he needs to eat healthy, with a set quantity, and at regular intervals. But there are some food items that may work against diabetes and make you severely ill. Therefore, the following is a list of foods for diabetics to eat to help you plan your diet.
- Complex High Fiber Carbohydrates: Studies show that a diet rich in dietary fiber is a preventive against diabetes. Fiber decelerates the body's digestion, metabolic rate, and absorption of carbohydrates. It increases the sensitivity of tissues to insulin, hence preventing rises in blood sugar levels. It is recommended to restrict the intake of refined carbohydrates and fat foods. Food items like oats, cereals, legumes, wholegrain products, dried beans, peas, lentils, etc. are rich in fiber content and should necessarily be included in your diabetic diet plan.
- Starch Rich Foods: Though white bread may not be that good for diabetes, you can have it to include enough starch in your diet along with vegetables, pasta, cereals, and grains.
- Vegetables: Vegetables like cabbage, spinach, broccoli, green beans, carrots, tomatoes, etc. are great sources of fiber, minerals and vitamins and should be included in your diet.
- Fruits: Fruits, though rich in fiber, minerals, and vitamins, are also a great source of carbohydrates, and hence should be consumed in moderation. According to the calorie count, two to four servings of fruits like apples, bananas, mango, oranges, raisins, and grapefruit per day can be considered.
- Milk: Milk is the most important source of vitamins and minerals that our body needs. Fat free sources of milk like yogurt or low fat milk can be given to the patient.
- Meat: Meat, though essential for our body, should be eaten only in moderation. Meat substitutes like red meat, poultry, cheese, tofu, eggs, fish, etc can also be included in the diet plan.
- Oil and Fats: Avocado oil, pure olive oil, sesame oil, soybean oil, etc. can be used for cooking diabetic recipes and dishes.
