Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which the body is unable to produce sufficient amount of the insulin hormone, which is required to convert sugar, starch, and other food into energy. It causes abnormally high glucose levels in the blood that can lead to severe health problems. The patients are normally encouraged to have a diabetic diet with reduced carbohydrate intake as they have a high glycemic index which increases the glucose level in the body. It is recommended to restrict the intake of refined carbohydrates and fat foods. Food items like oats, cereals, legumes, wholegrain products, dried beans, peas, lentils, etc. are rich in fiber content and should necessarily be included in your diabetic diet plan.
  • Starch Rich Foods: Though white bread may not be that good for diabetes, you can have it to include enough starch in your diet along with vegetables, pasta, cereals, and grains.
  • Vegetables: Vegetables like cabbage, spinach, broccoli, green beans, carrots, tomatoes, etc. are great sources of fiber, minerals and vitamins and should be included in your diet.

  • Meat: Meat, though essential for our body, should be eaten only in moderation. Meat substitutes like red meat, poultry, cheese, tofu, eggs, fish, etc can also be included in the diet plan.
  • Oil and Fats: Avocado oil, pure olive oil, sesame oil, soybean oil, etc. can be used for cooking diabetic recipes and dishes.
