Lionel Messi Wins the Ballon d'Or
Argentine wonderkid Messi named the European footballer of the year.

The Ballon d'Or award is given to the player voted by the journalists all over the world as the best player in the world. The prize is organized by the magazine France Football. Originally, this award was handed out only to European players playing in Europe, but now pretty much anyone in the world can be given this award.
With 3 players from FC Barcelona in the shortlisted 10, and a treble success this year for the club, it was just a question of who among Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi wins this award. But the Argentine, who finished second runner-up and then runner-up over the last two years, came on top this year, comprehensively beating the others.
Messi won the award by a very large margin, having 473 points to second placed Cristiano Ronaldo's 233. Barcelona's Xavi came in third place with 170 points.
Messi was part of the historic treble winning Barcelona team which scooped up the Spanish Primera Liga, the Copa Del Rey and the UEFA Champions League. Messi was an important part of the squad and scored a staggering 38 goals in 51 appearances last season for Barcelona. Not a bad haul for someone who usually plays as a winger!
