Link Popularity, What it is, Why its Important, Why you Need it

Link popularity is the quality and quantity of links from other sites pointing to yours. Of course that means they have your URL on one of their pages. A link on another site pointing to yours is referred to as a back link, or inbound link. The better your link popularity, the higher you will rank in Google, Yahoo, and many other places, and it will increase your traffic exponentially, and ensure your long term exposure.

By quality I mean a couple things. The popularity of a site pointing to yours is one factor, that forms a "stronger" backlink to your site. Popularity of the site pointing to yours is only one factor, the relevancy and similarity of the site is another just as important factor. The relevancy or similarity of the site is determined by the search engine spider which crawls websites periodically, by comparing the Titles, Keywords, and Text found on that site, to yours. The more relevant the Spider deems each site to each other, the stronger the backlink found there will become.

It may not be true for all search engines, but for Google, link popularity is the most important factor in determining your placement with them. The exact algorithms for determining your placement in Google are a closely guarded secret, but link popularity, however it is determined, is the most important factor. Since Google is the most popular search engine, link popularity and forming backlinks should be high priority if you want long term search engine traffic to your site, as well as good placement.

Link popularity is not the only thing you need to consider when trying to get traffic to a website, or anything, on the internet. If your interested you should also look up search engine optimization (SEO), and keyword research for your site, Pay-per-Click (PPC) advertising perhaps, among other things.
