Linen Closet
Facing a problem locating stuff in your own closet? If yes, it's time you organized it! Read on for quick tips on linen closet organization...

How to Organize a Linen Closet
Step 1
One of the first things to do is to get rid of the stuff that you do not need. So, take all the linen out of the closet and if there are some old, worn out linens, which you never ever plan to use, discard them. Storing them thinking that one day you might make some good use of them is not at all a good idea as in most cases, it never actually happens!
Step 2
Now that you have all the stuff that you need, start categorizing it. So, make stacks of pillows, blankets, sheets, towels, table linens and cloth napkins. Making such categories will ensure that you do not have to spend time looking for a particular type of linen in your closet.
Step 3
Before storing the linen in the closet, clean it properly. For this, take a sponge, soak it in water and then wipe all the shelves of the closet with it, to get rid of the dust. Wait for the shelves to get dry and after that line them with an acid-free tissue paper. This will ensure that the linen does not get yellow or loses its color over time.
Step 4
Start arranging the different categories of linens in the closet. When you are stacking them, see to it that the shelves are not very heightened, otherwise, whenever you pull out a bed sheet or a towel, the entire row might crumble down. If the shelves in your closet are more than twelve to eighteen inches, get adjustable shelves from the market and insert them in your closet shelves to get the desired height. You can even make use of the shelf dividers to create partitions in your existing shelves or use wired baskets to store some items. This will help in keeping the linen categories prepared by you in place.
Step 5
When arranging the linen items in your closet, stack the ones that you use frequently, such as towels, in the middle shelves. The ones that you use once in a while such as blankets or pillows, put them in the uppermost or the lowermost shelves. Also, items that you use seasonally or on some occasions, can be stacked on the shelves that are not too handy to reach. To maintain this you can consider labeling the shelves. This will ensure that even children or guests in the house can find things easily in it or can keep back the things.
Step 6
To keep the linen fresh and to avoid build up of mold or mildew in the closet cabinet, after every six months, get all the items in it laundered. Another thing that you can do is to place an open box in which baking soda or calcium carbonate is placed, in the closet. This will keep the linen smelling fresh throughout the day. Using vacuum-sealed bags, zippered bags or storing certain items by rolling them in acid-free tissue paper, will elongate their life and keep them from any probable damage. Using wired shelves helps in proper ventilation too. Some things to avoid storing linens are - paper and plastic bags as well as cardboard boxes, as these can spoil the fabric.
So, you can see, with proper organization, you can save on time, space and your energy! Plus, you ensure that your linen lasts longer, looks fresh and new, all the time! One last tip before I sign off - always store washed and cleaned items in your linen closet. This keeps them safe and fresh throughout!
