Each environment has different requirements and each will have an impact on the range that your collar will be effective. The distance between the transmitter and the receiver is known as the range. The range determines how effective your training collar is going to be at full function. Each manufacturer offers a variety of ranges. These are typically described as "line of sight" and are quoted on each system. "Line of sight" refers to the distance that is flat with no obstacles between transmitter and collar. These ranges also assume that the weather is clear.

Factually, we all understand that if we are training our dogs to work in the field, chances are that we are going to have obstacles – trees, shrubs, and weather will all play a factor. Depending on the terrain, this could also mean mountains, lakes and even ravines. Some areas could also have a range of other factors such as humidity, rain, smoke and even heavy fog – all of these can distort the transmission of a signal. Determine early on what type of range you are going to need for optimal training of your dog.

Those who are training a pet would certainly not need the same range of sight as someone training in the field. Training a pet would require only about two to three hundred yards. These units tend to be more affordable than range training units. If you’re training a field dog, find a unit that provides the largest range that will provide effective stimulation of your dog.

You will find some models that offer very large ranges - some up to two miles. These units are specially designed to allow for an operating range that provides effective training stimulation even in areas that are dense with obstacles. Positioning of transmitters also plays a role in effectiveness.

Effective signals are broadcast most readily in vertical positions. This often requires the transmitter is held in the air. This will provide the most powerful signal that will safely help you train your dog. Should you have any problems with the operating range of your transmitter, try moving to higher ground and see if that will help.

One of the secrets to successfully training your dog regardless of the method you are using is consistency. If you do not use a range strong enough to be accurate, it’s going to hinder your training. If your dog is wandering around trying to find game, he’s liable to ignore you if you are not able to provide a proper level of stimulation along with your command. In addition to providing inaccurate signals or not enough stimulation, your dog could get hurt if he becomes lost or confused about where he is. Ensure that you keep your dog safe and that you have purchased a system that provides the proper range for your training needs – it’s better to have too much range than not enough for your dog’s safety and your peace of mind.
