Lifelong Friend

Why does it have to end like this?
Love truly is a battlefield,
War is tough, swing and a miss,
Leaving around strands of my heart.

What happened to the days where we used to smile?
Talking nonstop sun up till sundown,
Our imagination stretched out for miles,
Now it seems it’s all been turned around.

We used to tell each other everything.
Now secrets are spread about,
Not knowing what the future may bring,
Not knowing how I can possibly manage without.

I wish I could dig a tunnel
For every mile and memory between us,
All the pieces once compact would crumble,
Leaving you and me in the dust.

At one point in life I needed you,
But you’re no longer here for me,
At one point our friendship was true,
But now that you’re gone, I can finally see.

All those memories between us,
Bring you no meaning or sorrow,
We have no base, no solidity or trust,
Just temporary heartache to borrow.

I know when this is over, you will be done,

Seeing the look in your eye,
I can already see what’s coming,
I’m not ready to say goodbye,
But there’s no point in carelessly running.

Eventually you will win,
For it takes 2 to win this battle,
Then your new life will begin,
While I remain in the shadows.

I wish you only knew the pain,
Resting inside my salacious heart,
The Ultimate race to conjure shame,
Trying to keep us from tearing apart.

But my satisfactory will be from your pleasure,
I’ll do whatever needed within my control,
For if it is not enough to love beyond measure,
I shall do whatever it takes to pay the toll.

In my heart, my mind, my soul, my faith,
I know we are friends till the end,
But I’ve often been proven in the wrong,
