Life and Time

A poem about life...
Conception is a miracle, when sperm and egg unite
and though it may seem commonplace
the odds for life are slight

Gestation is a time for growth, a silent, sacred term
when simple cells divide and morph
be it human, plant or germ

Infancy,.. the initial stage, each birth is all so rare
each babe, each pup, each blade of grass
cries out to all for care

Adolescence, learning years, the act and react phase
environmental gives and takes,..
life dynamics mold our ways,…
we start to count the days

Puberty, the pre teen times
from boy to man, from girl to dame
from worm to butterfly
the loss of innocence
and the birth of shame
we start to understand, in life..
nothing,…
and no one
stays the same

High school, braces, cars and dates
long phone calls with your friends
anticipation fills each day
and the drama never ends

Graduation, summertime
foot loose and fancy free
college, boot camp, full time job
the world,.. it beacons thee…
so much to try, so far to go
so much to see,
no thought of your
mortality

Adulthood,… on your own an thangs
decisions, bills and trials,…
hard lessons learned from trusting folks
with lies behinds their smiles
pulled wisdom teeth, insurance men
religion,…PTA
marriage, mortgage, children, fears
politics, careers and tears,..
days darting bye….the months,… they fly
friends come and go, hello,.. good by
gained weight, lost hair,
and you don’t care…
bifocals, root canals and shit
"don’t lay me off and I won’t quit "…
the substance of our middle years

Growing old,…
or staying young…
a state of mind we say
and yet,..
reflection rules the day…
"if I’d done this, if they’d done that,…
if I knew then what I now….
if I could visit
yesterday"…

Gold watches, pensions,
aches and pains..
lost hearing, sight and mind
disease and death await…
the enduring mystery of fate
most fight it,… and,…
some can not wait
