Life Is Funny, Isn't It?

Life is a funny thing. And over the years, many people find that out.
They met in a rain storm, getting coffee during a break from the office
She was running into the coffee shop, and he was walking out
She was wet, and he was dry
And then, instead of one of them being wet, and one bring dry, they were both wet
And his coffee was spilled
They met there everyday for three weeks
He asked her out
She accepted.

Their relationship blossomed, and grew
Slowly and surly, they became each other
They knew secrets
They knew weaknesses
They knew family
They knew a lot.

And then, he wanted more
He wanted the American Dream, without the picket fence
And for a while, she let him believe that she wanted that too
But in the end, she didn't.

So when he was waiting, in front of everybody
Dressed up, smiling like it was the happiest day of his life
She sneaked out of the back window
And when they looked for her, she was nowhere to be found
No note
No warning
She never sent letters
Never called
Never e-mailed
She was just gone.

Years went by, and very slowly, the boy grew up
And wherever the girl was, she did too
The boy, he got the American dream
But it wasn't the love he had felt before
Still, it was love
A different kind of love.

The girl, she lived in sunny California, on the beach
She met someone who didn't want the American dream, but one of his own
And she fell in as much love as she could
But the truth was, she still loved her boy
She too had love
A different kind of love.

At a wedding, between the boy's best friend, and the girl's cousin, the two met once more
It had been years since they saw each other last.
Not since the wedding
Not for a long time
He had asked her to dance, in front of everyone
He knew her weakness
And she accepted
And when they danced, it was like the first time.
And they knew that they had loved each other.

The magic was broken, and they returned to their respectable sides of the room
But, the gossip came anyway
The boy, who was now a man, was sought by his girlfriend, and he explained in the most honest white lie,
'She was a friend from a long time ago. It was nothing.'
And the girl, who was now a woman, broke up with her boyfriend, because she knew it wasn't right,
'I love you, I really do. I just... it's not right. I'm sorry.'

The girl moved away from sunny California, and back to New York
She wasn't intimidated by the big city anymore
She got a small apartment
And got her own version of the American dream
It was perfect
Until the day she had gotten the letter from the man.

He was going to get married to 'the perfect woman.'
And the woman, decided that her old flame was no longer any of her business.
So she severed all relation with her.
It's a big city, but you run into people places
So when she did see them, she made sure to stay away
But it was nice to know that he was still alive.

And the man, he moved to a nice house in a nice neighborhood
His wife stayed home
He went to work
They drove a nice car
And went to Europe every summer.

When he had his first child, his whole family was happy
He sent a little note to all the people in this contacts
Well almost everyone
And they were all happy
Well almost all.

This went on for a few years, and the man had his third child
The woman had gotten a great job.

On a bad day for the boy, he came home
He hadn't meant to, but he yelled at his wife
Slammed a few doors
And scared his children
His wife said that she could never come back
And he left.

He walk around in the middle of the night
He had no idea where he was going
But his feet carried him to the most important place he had ever been
A place he hadn't been too in years
It was still a modest little coffee shop.

The woman had just gotten off work
It was dark out, and she didn't want to walk to her apartment
But she couldn't hail any cabs
And she didn't have any money with her anyway
So she walked.

She was walking home, when she saw a street sign
She walked down the street, and remember what her memory made her forget
Suddenly, rain started falling rapidly
And she started running
Finally she came to an old building
She pulled open the door, and bumped into someone
She was wet, and he was dry
And then, instead of one of them being wet, and one bring dry, they were both wet
And his coffee was spilled.

Life is funny, isn't it?
