Life Detached - Chapter 7

Jaden considers ending his life while Scar finds a possible way out.
Jaden woke up, groggily. He yawned, rubbing his eyes. He felt like shit. He hated himself for taking the ecstasy, for even trying to have fun at the rave, for even contacting Randell in the first place. He couldn't live like him. He felt jittery, and looked around the bright room. Sunlight streamed through the windows, and the sun glinted off something across the room. He looked closer and found a syringe. "Dammit." he cursed, getting up and slipping on a shirt. He picked it up. Who the fuck did Randell think he was? He would never shoot up with him. God, Randell had no brains. Jaden threw it to the ground, smashing it under his shoe, realizing he had lost his other shoe.

He thought about what would happen if he put a bullet through his head. Would it feel good? Would the cold metal feel refreshing against his warm overheated head?

"Where do you want to go now?" Scar asked Tony. She felt guilty that she had dragged him around all of these places. All of these memories that she had forced him to bear as well.

"I have a place." Tony said. They got into the car. "Get on that freeway."

Scar wondered where Tony wanted to go. Where would a little kid want to go? He was quiet most of the time, his eyes impassive. He was thinking deeply. Finally, he alerted her to take an exit, turn on a couple of streets, and they finally made it outside a house. Was this his home?

They sat on the steps, and Tony took Scar and sat her down on the steps. "There's... a way you can go back to the real world." he said very softly.
Scar looked at him closer. What was he trying to say?

"Remember how I said a ghost can pull his own plug? Well, since there always has to be an even number of ghosts, if a ghost pulls a plug and dies, it opens a doorway for another ghost to return home."

Scar said nothing, still trying to understand his intentions.

Tony then opened a window to the house and they climbed inside. It was a room with peach painted on the walls. There was a crib with a mobile over it, and a cute little baby girl was laying inside, drooling on the sheets and trying to touch the mobile.
"This is my room." Tony said. "Well, it was my room."

Scar looked around. There was still a boy-sized bed in the corner with outer space alien covers, but that was the only sign that this was his room. It was the baby's room.
"My mommy was going to have a baby when I became detached. Once they had the baby, Lily, their visits to meet me in the hospital got fewer and fewer. They come like once a month now." Tony but a light, loving hand on Lily's forward. She bubbled at the lips then shouted in glee.

Tony stepped back. Lily's parents burst into the room. Scar studied them. Tony resembled his mother. They were both beautiful parents. They knelt in front of Lily's crib and began talking to her in high musical tones.

Tony turned away, and Scar with him. "Listen, Scar." he said as they walked outside. "Little kids like me, it gets complicated when we try to return to the real world. Since we aren't completely developed yet, it's tough to reattach our soul to our body. If I pulled my own plug, you would be able to go back! You would be able to live again, and be with Jake or John or whatever his name is."

Scar couldn't stop the tears coming now. Here was a little boy, hadn't even hit his eleventh birthday yet, willing to sacrifice his life for a complete stranger to be happy. She buried her head in her hands. She wouldn't be able to live with herself if she went back after not being able to repay Tony.

"I... I can't let you do that." she finally managed.
"There's nothing for me here any more, Scar." he insisted. "I'm not living. My parents have Lily. They need to provide for her, not keep paying the hospital bills for a lost cause like me. I want them to move on. Without me."

We cried together, and before we knew it, we were at the hospital where he lay. He took his soft little hand in mine, and smiled between the tears. "It's time to go home, Scar." he said.
