Life after Sun Damaged Skin

There are many of us over the years have not taken care of our skin or even worse never protected ourselves from the sun. As much as we love being out in the sun, or spending time with our loved ones in the outdoors, we forget to put sunscreen on our body.

Being young and naive, I never thought about the effects of not taking care of my skin and the damage caused by the sun. Many weekends of being a teenager hitting the beach with sun tanning lotion, trying to absorb the sun rays in quest of the perfect tan has started to catch up with me in my later years.

At times I looked in the mirror surprised that my skin looked withered and dull. Well why wouldn’t it look very good after not protecting myself for so many years? I thought it was going to be hopeless battle on combating the aging process.

Here to say that is what peaked my interest in the skin care industry and doing research on different products. With technology always changing and new inventions in the world, how could the skin care industry be left behind?

Luckily there are products and treatments that will help us fight sun damaged skin. It is well known that Vitamin C will help reverse some of the negative effects of sun damage. Ingredients containing glycolic acid and hydroxy acids have a smoothing effect on the skin. Like any products, consistency is the key in repairing the skin. Treatments need to be followed on a regular basis to get results. These products will help remove the dead surface of the epidermis.

There are many medical treatments that can help rejuvenate your skin. One of the common procedures include laser surgery. Laser surgery removes thin layers of the skin. Although this may work, this procedure can be very costly. The other aspect is the healing time, which can set you out of commission for some time.

Other popular treatments are skin fillers which can also help with wrinkles and deep lines. Many medical procedures use hyaluronic acid or collagen in these troubled areas. The benefits are not permanent, but can last up to six months. Hylaform and Restylane are both common injectables of hyaluronic acid. As we get older, we lose these features in our skin, which allows the skin to wrinkle.

To fight off the wrinkles caused by sun damage, many people have turned to Botox as the final solution. Although this works, this can be very costly and for some very painful. Generally, this freezes the muscles under the skin which causes wrinkles and lines.

My personal favorite to fight off the sun damage is the use of chemical peels. I have seen great results of doing peels regularly. It removes the upper parts of the skin allowing recovery and re-growth of the skin. After the dead layers of skin are removed, your skin feels nice and soft. There is usually a little downtime with this treatment, but very much worth it.

No matter what medical treatment you may go for, it is important to learn from the mistakes from our youth and use sunscreen and daily products. We must learn to be consistent and use products with important ingredients. You too can get a second chance to protect and repair your skin after sun damage.
