Lies and Deception [Chapter 4]
Katrina tells the story of how she was changed to Josiah…
The park wasn’t that far away from the alley, it didn’t take the two that long to arrive. As they walked through the open park gates, Katrina was still holding onto Josiah’s arm. For her, the walk was rough as she soon spotted people walking around the streets. She later found herself thinking how unaware they all were, vulnerable, and weak.
Josiah always knew where this happened, for she would grip his arm tighter. Whenever that that would happen, he would change the subject. He was beginning to realize she was worse then he thought, but nothing that he couldn’t help.
"Katrina," he turned towards her, pushing a strand of her dark hair behind her ear.
She smiled at him, totally unaware of the feelings he has towards her. To her, all he has done for her is out of an act of friendship, "mhm?"
The two continued to walk down the cement path that circled the entire park. It was a dark, warm night, with a clear blue sky. Very few stars twinkled in the sky, most of them were blacked from the glare of the cities lights. Even so, it seemed like the perfect night.
"What happened the night you were changed?" Josiah asked quietly, curious because this topic was never brought up before.
There was silence, the question was quit random. At first, it didn’t seem like she was going to answer, but Katrina soon sighed, glancing upwards from her shoes.
"I was at work," she him, making it sound like the beginning of a story when all he thought she was going to give him was a short explanation.
"You worked? Where?" he questioned her. Josiah was unemployed when he was changed.
"Yeah. I worked the front desk at a large business building. Mainly, I just took calls and transferred them to where they needed to go and help people with their questions," Katrina looked up at him, her skin looking pale by the lamp posts.
Josiah nodded, picturing her sitting behind a desk looking all professional and dressed in a business suit.
"Anyway," She continued, "I was working late, having to fill out some forms. Mostly everyone else was gone, except for the few that worked late into the night. I was just getting finished when someone came in. He was tall, dressed in expensive looking clothes, and he was handsome. If I saw him again, I’d recognize him in a second. He had a deep scare under one of his eyes."
By the description she gave him, Josiah knew exactly who she was talking about. His name was Jaxon, one of the more powerful vampire back at the covenant. Jaxon was evil, always using his charm to pull his victims near and always a big deal among the female vampire.
"He came in, just had a few questions a left. I didn’t think anything about it. I just finished my paperwork, got my stuff and locked the doors on my way out," Katrina deeply sighed, looking back down at her shoes.
"And that’s when he attacked you?" He asked once she seemed like she wasn’t going to finished.
She nodded quickly, "yeah. The next thing I knew I was slammed up against a brick wall, then I blacked out. I woke up later in that room with everyone else."
To Josiah, that didn’t seem like Jaxon’s usual way of doing it, but then again, Jaxon was totally unpredictable. That’s why he kept his distance from her, he didn’t want to get onto his lists. Josiah was already thought of as weird among the others, different. He feels awkward being around everyone else, "that’s all?"
"Yeah," Katrina looked up at him, her mood suddenly changing, "But, hey… It’s the past, we can’t change it.
Josiah nodded, turning his head towards him and giving her a grin, "Yeah, you’re right."
She laughed, hugging his arm tighter as they turned and walked past the park’s water fountain. Sighing, Katrina rested her head against his shoulder, "it’s probably time to get back now, isn’t it?"
Josiah looked up and around, spotting the distant grand clock. Seeing the time, he nodded, "Yes. It’s getting late," he turned around, walking back in the direction that they came. He heard her sigh and he agreed with her, he didn’t want to go back either. But, he knew that it’d cause a major problem back there, and he knew that they didn’t like problems and would take care of it. That would mean disposing the two of them away.
