LG GW550 Another Windows Mobile Phone

Yes, its another mobile phone from LG that runs Windows Mobile. Will we ever see the end of this trend? Quite unlikely, the tie up between mobile phone manufacturer, LG, and the software developer, Microsoft, is for the long haul; so expect LG to be creating Windows Mobile phones for quite some time.

As for the mobile phone itself, the 550 is not bad at all. In fact if you have been keeping a close eye on the mobile devices being released with this generation, the 550 is a pretty solid package. The first thing people will notice is the lack of a touch screen function. Yes, this is a smart phone but it only has a 2.4" inch screen. It may be QVGA, but that does not really amount to much when the screen is all squeezed up in the face of the phone.

Instead, users will have a full QWERTY keyboard right in the front of the phone. Not that bad, but the buttons are rather small and can be hard to use if you have not been blessed with tiny fingertips. Aside from this little control quirk, the 550 is a pretty solid phone to have. Hopefully, since there are not that many features and extras on the device, it will not cost as much as the other devices in its category.

Device Details

There are not many details that have been finalized regarding the LG GW550, but from the initial press releases and what we have actually seen, this is probably all of it. First off is the 3 mega pixel camera, this choice is a bit expected. No word yet on LED flash but the lower camera specs means that the camera is there because every smartphone has to have a camera and this mobile phone would feel incomplete without one.

This is hardly crippling since the average folk will not recognize the difference of images shot with a 3 mega pixel camera and that which was taken with a 5 mega pixel camera. Internet connectivity will be done through HSDPA since there is no Wireless LAN support. This choice is a bit sad for people who have the convenience of always being around WiFi areas or use a wireless router at their homes and offices.

The battery is 1300mAh; now that is a serious battery that means business. There is no official word as to how long the talk time or standby time would be, but expect this phone to last for over a week on standby mode. The fortunate thing about having a small screen is that it also has less power consumption than that of a full screen phone. Size wise, this is a very compact phone. Not the slimmest at over a centimeter thick, but it will fit nicely into your front pocket or bag without being obtrusive.

The Final Word

This phone is at least worth waiting for and checking out. The features are not all that new, but it does make fro a very useful package, just be sure that you will be okay making a few compromises with the LG GW550 mobile phone.
